Does anyone know how to get the speakers set to off or whatever they need to be set at to get it to recognize an external amp?

    You shouldnt have to set any of that stuff. It should just recognize it once you hook up the pre-outs to your amp.

    I figured it would as well but after running the interconnects and moving the speak wires i got nuthin'
    wtf?
    i saw in an old thread someone "turned off" his speakers.It was an older Onkyo though.
    i set them to NONE and that's just what i got.None.

    "If you want to use a more powerful power amplifier and use the AV receiver as a preamp, connect it to the PRE OUT jacks, and connect all speakers and the subwoofer to the power amplifier. If you have a powered subwoofer, connect it to this AV receiver’s SUBWOOFER PRE OUT jack. You can connect the powered subwoofer with two SUBWOOFER PRE OUT jacks respectively. The same signal is output from each jack. Note
    *1 Specify “None” for the channel that you don’t want to output." TX-NR808 Manual pp. 16

    I'll try that again.I didn't have them set to "none" on the first try.Let's see what happens.

    Before buying new ICs make sure you connected everything correctly. First make sure that you connected the ICs to the PRE-OUT jacks in the back of your receiver. Then the other end of the ICs get connected to your external amp. Then connect the speaker wire from your external amp to your speakers.

    I have that very same Onkyo TX-NR808 and use it as a pre-amp to my Adcom 555II. I couldn't find any setting to turn the main channel amp off. It works like a charm. It must recognize that there is no load.

    Ok,the amp had a standby mode in between on and off.thats where i had it set.duh.
    Now i just need to eliminate the hum and i'll be great.

    Hey brgmn I am using an old Onkyo tx-4500 as a pre for an Audiosource Amp Three. When I plugged it in I was getting a bad hum. After reading some forums, I saw suggestions to plug in the amp with a three to two prong adapter. This eliminated the noise and it has worked fine since.

    I don't have any issues with hum. Both of mine are plugged into the same wall outlet. I don't remember if they were grounded but I think they both are. That 808 is one big AVR. Mine won't fit on my shelving. Good thing it's only temporary.

    You can also just ground the two chassis together.

    Fixing ground loop properly requires more than a cheater-plug.

    Cheater-plugs are illegal in some states.

    Defeating the built-in grounding for your components is potentially dangerous.
