Monitor 70 fronts, 60 surrounds?

I know that in a home theater setup people generally don't worry about matching all four speakers, but I also use my system for multichannel audio (SACDs) where you're generally supposed to have all four speakers be the same.
The thing is, I'm wondering if the fact that I'm using a subwoofer would negate the need for 70's in the rear (or anywhere really). Would there really be any significant tonal differences between the 70s and the 60s in regards to the higher bass, the midrange and the treble?

They should match fine and sound great. I used 60's in the front and the 30's in the rear and they sounded good, so don't worry the 60's can definitely handle surround duty. Just make sure they're adequately powered to get the best sound out of them. Oh and welcome to the forum, there's a lot of good information here.

I agree with everything said above. The biggest thing IMHO is that everything be voice matched, which you have when you stick with the same series monitor speakers. I put in a BIG second for proper amplification. An AVR can power them, but I can speak from first hand experience that when you get a good external amplifier under the monitor series, they REALLY open up and have a much fuller bottom end. I even removed the sub from my 2 channel system in my living room as the bass is full, clean, and fast with my external amp.

I use 60's for fronts with a CS2 and 50 for sides [saves no stands needed] and 40 for rear's on my pioneer Have a PSW 125 and trust me nothing else is needed for my taste.

I have 70's in the front and 60's for surrounds, and I listen to a lot of multi-channel audio. I would still keep the sub around if I were you to round out the bass. The performance without a sub is ok - just a matter of personal taste.polk monitor 70's

I just bought the monitor 70's a month ago and had them paired with some old Kenwoods I got from a guy at work. Well i decided to get a pair of 60's to match and these things together sound amazing.
I say go for it. I got mine from newegg while they had a $65 discount per speaker.
