I just bought a DSW 3000 Sub as an open box demo special and after hooking it up, I am worried that it might be blown as the sound is all distorted (even at the lowest volume levels). Before I take it back, I just want to make sure that I've hooked it up properly.

The receiver is older with Dolby Pro Logic and a mono out jack. I've hooked the cable to the LFE input on the sub. I don't have any way to adjust the sub on my receiver other than the master volume, bass/treble knobs, and to turn Dolby Pro Logic on/off and there is also a loudness button. I have tried various and numerous settings on the sub and on the receiver and all I get is a muddy distorted sound. Please help...
