William Preston Lane, Jr. Memorial Bridge (Bay Bridge), Maryland
Drivers are notoriously afraid of this bridge, as it’s subjected to frequent—and often violent—storms. And when the bad weather hits, forget about visibility: get to the middle of this five-mile-long bridge and you can barely see land.

Where: Spanning the Chesapeake Bay to connect Maryland’s eastern and western shores.

Stats: Nearly 5 miles long; 186 feet high at its highest point.

What a crock.

    Yeah, what a joke! Notoriously?

In case you're scared, this company will have someone drive your vehicle across: http://www.kentislandexpress.com :p:p:p

    From the Bay Bridge FAQ:
Does the Authority provide escort services for customers who are uncomfortable driving across the William Preston Lane Jr. Memorial (Bay) Bridge?

The Authority no longer provides a drive-over service. Please contact the vendor listed below to make arrangements. The cost of a drive-over will be $25 per trip ($30 for bicycles). The vendor listed has been approved for drive-over services:

If you were scared wouldndt you be even more scared to cross with a stranger behind the wheel? :p

    REGARDS SNOW
Well, I just pulled off the impossible by doing a double-blind comparison all by myself, purely by virtue of the fact that I completely and stupidly forgot what I did last. I guess that getting old does have its advantages after all :D

    REGARDS SNOW

Well,,, good point but the same can be said for flying. People put their lives in a stranger's hand on a daily basis.

Just remember, falling off a brigde doesn't kill you. It is the impact:D

Those stupid water grates they have on, I believe the westbound bridge, caught a tire on an ex's SUV I was driving in the rain and severely swerved her car.

Nearly shat my pants. On that day, the Chesapeake Bay Bridge was #1 on my list.

About 15 years ago I was bringing my fathers boat back from Annapolis to Middle River and I had just gone under the North span of the Bay Bridge and a six person helicopter flew under both spans of the Bay bridge from the South and right over top of the mast of the boat.

I was not scared but I think I did say WTF.

Ive traveled the Chesapeake Bay Bridge tunnel more times than I can count and only on one occasion have I been a little nervous. We weer traveling to the Eastern Shore side early one morning during high tide and a really bad thunderstorm came across the bay and I swear waves were close to coming over the road. A little scary.

My first time driving across the Bay Bridge was a windy day and I was driving my parent's VW bus.
I love heading east on it, but hate going west, because that means my vacation is over! :(

Maybe a top 10 list would have been more reasonable, because the majority of those bridges don't seem to have much of a fear factor to them at all.

The only thing scary about any bridge is falling off of it, although, falling on it might be a bit snarky as well.

    Happy Holloween.

This probably not on the list becuase it has now been closed and dismantled.

But the Grace Memorial Bridge in Charleston, SC was a wild ride. This youtube video is pretty good, but it is hard to appreciate just how high it gets and how steep the grade is. Notice all the people riding the brakes on the way down at the end. About half way through you can get appreciation of the lane width. Speed limit until it closed was 45 mph, but some people would go close to 60. Until about 1966, this sucker was 2 way!

I love bridges for the engineering marvel of them, but every time I go over the I-295 bridge around Richmond Va. I get a little nervous. In the early 1990's my wife and I were headed to PA from NC to visit family. It was stormy, but not actively raining, and we went over the bridge immediately after a storm had gone through. Imagine our surprise when we see a couple of tractor trailers on their side! Apparently a tornado had JUST gone through. EMS hadn't even arrived yet and people were still climbing out of their vehicles.

The Mississippi River bridge between Sabula IA and Savannah IL is an old, emphasis on old, steel bridge with widely spaced steel mesh as the decking. I have friends who have went over it on motorcycles and won't ever do it again. As you're weaving around on your motorcycle from the weave of the mesh you are also basically looking down through the open mesh at the river below.

Ever been over the bridge at the New River Gorge in WV? It's the one on their state quarter. That sucker is tall, every year they close it so people can go base jumping off of it.

I think it's funny what they said about the Florida bridge - to sum up - at first glance, the bridge looks harmless, but it's location in the Florida panhandle is smack in the middle of a lot of hurricanes.

I, for one, would think crossing any bridge during a hurricane would be dangerous, and would avoid :)

Well, that and it would be closed during the hurricane and likely during a tropical storm as well.

I can vouch for this one, I'm from the Iowa City area and have crossed most bridges along the Mississippi. I think we used to call this one the 'Wee bridge' as child. Good stuff.
