Hello everyone - this is my first post here (newbie alert) and I need to know where to begin.......here is what I have:

RM85 speaker set
PSW110 subwoofer
Yamaha RX-V765 receiver
Samsung UN46C8000XF LED-LCD TV
LG BD590 bluray player

Now, I don't even know what I need for wires to connect the speakers to the receiver....I have been reading some of the posts here but it is above my head....can someone tell me what wire I should be purchasing or where to look to educate myself?

Thank you - and excited to put together my first home theater system :)

Greetings! And welcome to Club Polk.

A good place to start with wiring and cables is monoprice.com

They should have a good selection of basic wiring to meet all your needs.

At your level I would buy hardware store stranded 12 qauge wire. You can buy it in bulk, and cut it to the appropriate length. This is more than adequate cable for getting started.
Lumin X1 file player, Westminster Labs interconnect cable
Sony XA-5400ES SACD; Pass XP-22 pre; X600.5 amps
Magico S5 MKII Mcast Rose speakers; SPOD spikes

Shunyata Triton v3/Typhon QR on source, Denali 2000 (2) on amps
Shunyata Sigma XLR analog ICs, Sigma speaker cables
Shunyata Sigma HC (2), Sigma Analog, Sigma Digital, Z Anaconda (3) power cables

Mapleshade Samson V.3 four shelf solid maple rack, Micropoint brass footers
    Three 20 amp circuits.

....and some complain that with 50% margins the independent retailer is antiquated, a rip off and should die.
If I went to a buy a fishing rod and I was not sold hooks......

Monoprice.com works just fine. Although the 12 gauge cable I bought looks like Monster 14, mics to that and the casing looks cheap. Home Depot sells speaker wire although usually 18 or so gauge. I have some Radio shack 16 gauge I am happy with. I would think that would carry the current necessary for RM85's for runs under 20 foot.

Oxygen-free copper (OFC) or Oxygen-free high thermal conductivity (OFHC) copper generally refer to a group of wrought high conductivity copper alloys that have been electrolytically refined to reduce the level of oxygen to .001% or below.

Opps I checked the link. Should have done that first. It is CL2 in-wall. Are you running the wires in wall. Either way that is ok. Cosmetically the white casing can be more appealing. That would work just fine.

Home Depot or Radio Shack to get you going, I would stay away from Monster Cable.

Let them know if you need in wall, its a fire rated wire your supposed to have for that application.

Would it be ok to use 12 guage wire for the subwoofer and 14 guage wire for the rest of the speakers? All runs are under 25 feet....

the subwoofer uses a cable from the sub pre out on your yamaha to the sub input. go with 12 guauge if possible for your speakers
