Lc265i and onkyo608

Hello all,

My first post. I have just purchased 3 lc265i speakers to use in a L,C,R configuration.
My current amp is an onkyo tx-sr608. Does anyone have any experience of this amp driving these speakers?

Also I plan on buying two rc60i's as my rear/surrounds to complete my 5.1. Will this match the lc265i's tonally and will they be overwhelmed by the 265's upfront?

In another room, I plan to replace a KEF KHT2005.1 surround system (driven by a Denon 3802) with three rc55i's (L,C,R) and two rc60i's (surround). Will this combination match the quality of my KEFs? I love the KEFs, have served me well for 8 years, but am redecorating and it has been 'decreed' that no speakers should be on show - hence the need for in-wall/ceiling speakers.

All answers appreciated. Thanks.

The LC's are in ceiling LSI speakers which are 4ohms, so no your Onkyo does not have the power to push them to their full potential, and if you turn up the volume too much you run the risk of going in to protect mode.

Unless you can upgrade your receiver to get the Onkyo 708 or higher, to add a seperate amplifier you should get more RC speakers.

    Thanks for the reply.

Looks like I need an amp upgrade. Would the pioneer sc-lx72 (sc-25 in the US) fit the bill?

Yes, that will work, but you should still look into also getting a seperate amplifier to plug into the Pioneer to get your speakers working to their full potential.

Well I did it with my onk 787 receiver, an older model and it worked just fine as far as power, no protection issues, however, the receiver is not rated for 4 ohm speakers, obviously it can drive them, its a safety issue and I do not recommend you actually do it. Now as far as Sound Quality, I found the onk to sound a bit crisp at volume.

Those Polk speakers are awesome, congrats. There are many great HT receivers out there that will drive these speakers just depends on your budget. Some people use a seperate amplifier to power things.

Hmmm, If I still need to get a separate amplifier to power them with the pioneer sc-25 (lx-72), shouldn't I just as well keep the cheaper Onkyo 608 receiver and buy an amp for it?

I am also thinking of getting the Onkyo NR-807 or 808. Will these cope?

The 807 seems to have given it's owners lots of problems (that's what it seems when you search different forums)

I am using two rc60i's as my rear surrounds. I am assuming since they are all Polk audio speakers they should be tonally balanced or am I assuming too much?

Thanks for taking the time to answer my many questions.

I am not sure if that 608 has pre-outs for an external amp, seems like it did not, but I am not sure. I have not personally purchased any newer onkyo products for quite a while so would not really know if their are actual issues with their new gear. Polk does recommend Onkyo as one of the companies to consider for a receiver to drive their speakers, however, remember the RTi line and below are 8 ohm design.

Your rc60 are not "voiced" the same as the Lci, in a perfect world you keep them all the same, but its not a huge deal, at least your fronts are matched, I use the LCi80 as my rear surrounds and can attest to their awesomeness, but fact is the surrounds carry very little of the soundtrack.

edit, welcome to Club Polk, lots of good folks here, a few back door trolls and plenty of good times.

Your 608 does not have audio-pre-outs for an external amp so that's not an option.

the 800 series does....so does the SC-25. But the Pioneer is also more powerful and might be able to drive those even though they present a lower impedance load--sort of like Ted did with his Onkyo. An external amp is still the first choice, however.

Thanks, I had planned to go for the KEF in walls (ci200.3Qs) as I already knew the KEF range, but I listened to the lc265i's and they were MUCH better than the KEFs.

I chose the rc60i's for budgetary reasons. Currently doing a home build so every cent counts...

I came across someone offering an onkyo tx-nr1007 for sale. This seems to on the same par power-wise with the pioneer sc-25. Would I be missing out if I chose this (onkyo 1007) to drive my speakers and HT over the pioneer sc-25?

I doubt I'll be getting an external amp - trying to keep amount of gear to a minimum...

    Thanks.

Pulled the trigger and went for the onkyo nr 1007. Seems powerful enough. Haven't tested to destruction yet as we are still building.

I also got a few rc60i's for use as surrounds and ceiling speakers in other rooms and to be honest am a bit underwhelmed by them.

I'll still install them but would look at upgrading them in the HT setup when I have more funds to spare...
