Kev...Im just not a huge fan of DLP technology the whole bulb color wheel thing dosent appeal to me. A friend of mine had a Sony DLP he was out $300 once the bulb went after about 2 years. Also he had problems with his TV shutting down in the middle of programming which Sony told him was due to excessive heat build up. My Panny hasnt skipped a beat in the 3 years Ive owned it.

I'd take LCD or Plasma over DLP anyday of the week, and twice on Sunday!

Depending on your budget there's other options out there.

Pioneer Plasma (best on the market but very pricey)
Samsung LCD or Plasma (great PQ without a lot of $$$)
    Sony LCD (great PQ)

    skip the DLP Technology.

I have a DLP, and it is serving me well--but my next HDTV will be plasma.

Don't rag so hard on DLP's guys. Yes, it is an aging technology and yes, Plasma and LCD have passed it in quality.

However, from a budget standpoint you can't go wrong with a DLP if you want a large screen at an affordable price.

You can get a top model DLP 72" for around $2k, and have a beautiful picture. The price for anything over 55" for a good LCD or Plasma is still prohibitive to most people, although you certainly get better quality for the price. For me, it wasn't worth the extra cost when I got my Mitsu 65" 3 years ago. Now my mother-in-law has it, and just now had to replace the bulb...after almost 3 years of constant-on watching.

I would skip Sony LCD's. Overpriced TV's. Paying for the name. Depending on his budget I would look at the following:

    Panny Plasma
    Samsung Plasma
    LG LED/LCD

Sony doesn't even come in mind anymore for TV's since they are so overpriced.

LG makes some really really nice sets right now.

Panny is still king IMHO, they make sweet TV's which are priced perfect.

Can you go projector/screen in that room? For the price your about to spend on a 65" you can have 100-110 inch screen/projector in HD glory.

Honestly I have both tv's, only my Mitsubishi is a 73" and my Panny is a 50". Between the two i'd take the Plasma, however my dlp has a great picture and isn't half as bad as everyone makes them out to be.

I have a 65 inch Mits - owned it since Dec 2006. One bulb replacment under the Circuit Ciity (rip) extended warranty at close to 6000 hours. No problems. Some fan noise, but no glare thanks to the matte finish on the screen. Asking what tv has a better picture is subjective. I preferred the frameless look of the Mitsubishi - it's all picture. The DLP RPTV offers a bigger screen at a great price point. You can get a 73 inch DLP for the price of the Panasonic 65 inch plasma. I would love that 82 inch Mits, but my wife would put me and the tv out on the street...

The Panasonic offers better off axis viewing angles, and a slightly more accurate picture, (better black levels) but consumes more energy than a DLP tv.

With the Mits, factor in replacing bulbs. Calibrate for a longer bulb lifespan.

My next set will probably be a Panasonic plasma.

Sony never manufactured a tv with DLP - they used their variant of LCOS called SXRD.

Those Sony rear projection sets were notorious for optical block failures. Sony extended the warranty period on that component..

This is an easy choice, as can be illustrated by the votes. DLP has a good picture and is going to be cheeper than the Plasma, but the advantages of the plasma are just to great.

Improved reliability and mounting versatility are at the top of the advantage list.

I'd be surprised if DLP wasn't killed off outright in 2011.
Do you hear that buzzing noise?

I've this same 65S2 for 3 months now and love it. I'd pick LCD before DLP. But plasma has the best of both; thinness, refresh speed, black level, viewing angle. plus there is no flat panel at this size and price with any brand.

my Rti8s and CSi5 look tiny next to this S2
