You should listen to the Sun Sessions stuff. This music shows you why he was the king. I have read that when this music was recorded he was "just fooling around in the studio". Amazing stuff for "just fooling around"!!

Taken from a recent Audioholics reply regarding "Club Polk" and Polk speakers:
"I'm yet to hear a Polk speaker that merits more than a sentence and 60 seconds discussion." :\
My response is: If you need 60 seconds to respond in one sentence, you probably should't be evaluating Polk speakers.....

Agreed. His career can be divided into three main chapters (the hep hillbilly cat, the movie years and the Vegas years) that being part of the hillbilly cat. I would suggest checking out the CD of The Million Dollar Quartet Complete recordings. He performed with Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins, and Jerry Lee Lewis. It appeals more toward your true purist / completist fan. What I found particularly entertaining was the banter between the guys.

Always been a huge admirer and fan of his music, but alas at the same time I've never explored it very much. Outside of three CD's, I'm not that familiar with his wide range of works.

I think this should be addressed!

If you're ever in Memphis take the Sun Studio tour. They really fill you in on the early history of Elvis and how he got to where he did. Graceland is OK, fun to do once, but at Sun Studios you get more of the real story of his start in the business.

What about his 70s output? I know there's that stereotype that Elvis didn't produce much music of importance during that decade, but singles like "Burning Love" showed that he can still "bring it" when he felt like it.

First off. A visit to Memphis is on my agenda. Coupla things here. Thanks for the tip on the Sun Studios tour. I also want to visit the place where he and the Memphis Mafia used to get BBQ pizza. Its a pizza smothered with smoked pulled pork, cheese and BBQ sauce. Regarding the statement on the 70's years, that would fall into what I called the Vegas chapter in his life. Which is basically from the 68 comeback special until he died. Lastly on the FRIED Peanut Butter and Nana Samitch you need to use plenty of butter, REAL butter. Trivia time - anyone know why Elvis used all the scarves as part of his concert garb ? There is a legit reason, no lewd remarks please.
Thank ya.... Thank ya very much.

    Hey NAP,
The pop legend has it that Elvis was a truck driver and he wanted to give his mother a gift. He went into Sun Records studio and made a 45 with some songs his mother liked. The person who made the recording suggested he cut a few more just for fun. The rest is history. Is this really what happened?
    Cheers, Ken

I had always heard that too, but I either read or saw a show that says that isn't true. It went on to show the date he did it and advise that it was nowhere his mothers birthday...

I'll see if I can find the info.

From CNN - Rescued Chilean miner gets Elvis invitation
(CNN) -- A special invitation to visit Elvis Presley's Memphis, Tennessee, home awaited Edison Pena when he emerged from the San Jose mine Wednesday after more than two months below ground.

Pena, a die-hard Elvis fan, led his fellow trapped miners in Elvis sing-alongs to pass time while waiting for their rescue.

"A trip to Graceland in Memphis could be just the escape he needs after such a long period of time underground," said Kevin Kern, the spokesman for Elvis Presley Enterprises.

The company and the Memphis Convention and Visitors Bureau has offered Pena an all-expenses-paid trip for two, Kern said.

Pena, the 12th miner to be rescued, looked fit and exuberant as he emerged Wednesday.

"He's just a true blue Elvis fan," Kern said. "I can only imagine that Graceland would be the trip of a lifetime."

Kern suggested the best time for Pena's visit would be after Christmas decorations go up "inside and out" at Graceland on November 19. They stay up until Presley's birthday on January 8, he said.

"He's welcome to come whenever he feels up to it," Kern said.

He would stay in luxury at the historic Peabody Hotel -- known for its trained ducks -- in downtown Memphis, he said.

Pena would "experience everything Elvis, but also soak up some local culture," Kern said. The city is also known for its barbecue and the role it played in the birth of the blues, soul and rock 'n' roll, he said.

Elvis Presley Enterprises sent Elvis music to Chile that was passed on to Pena underground, he said.

"He's been listening to Elvis songs while running in the mine," he said.

A mining consultant involved in the rescue effort told CNN that Pena jogged an hour a day up and down some 2.5 kilometers of tunnels that were safely accessible.

Ken - Elvis went into the studio to record an acetate for his mother's b-day. The secretary at Sun studios thought that there was "something" about him and took his name and address and passed it along to Sam Phillips. Sam Phillips hooked him up with guitarist Scotty Moore. They worked on making music and went back to Sun to record. Nothing seemed to be working until during a break they were playing around with the song "That's alright Mama". The song was recorded and later appeared on a local Memphis radio show entitled "Red, Hot and Blue" and was played fourteen times in a row.
Re: The rescued miner attending Graceland, Christmas at Graceland is special. Elvis always wanted the place completely decked out for the season.
    Cheers.
