I was just playing Modern Warfare 2 when suddenly the screen froze up and I couldnt do anything. Now, it doesnt recognize that I even have a disc in the player! I tried to put in a music CD and a blueray movie and nothing! It's not even recognizing that there's anything in the player! Any idea what the hell is going on? I'm freaking out here! It doesnt seem to be able to do anything. Right now its just an expensive piece of junk doing nothing. Is there anything I can do? I already tried returning to default settings and that did nothing. PLEASE HELP!

Disconnect it from the wall outlet for awhile to let it reset then plug it back in and try it out.

System reformat = loss of data.

Since the problem is with your PS3, I bet if you put your HDD into another PS3 it'd work so I suggest you keep your data. Maybe someone else could chime in?

No need to get so worked up! We'll figure it out :D

Well, I saved my game data, so thats not a problem. It's just strange how this happened. Playing a game one minute, then it freezes up on me and now it wont do anything. Wont recognize a disc of ANY kind: CD, SACD, Bluray, nothing!

Also, the little clock at the top right of the screen is whirling round and round like its searching for something but nothing is happening. Weird!

Sounds like the laser is down. But I don't understand why. A lot of people talk about their PS3 overheating. Mine NEVER does--going strong for 2.5-3 years. I thought these units were pretty DURABLE!

How many hours would you say you put on yours a week? Because everything has a failure point.

Not enough hours for this to happen! Maybe 5 hours a week. I love the machine itself and I've never had any issue with it before now....but the is a pretty damn big issue!

Well that's not heavy usage at all. I know my machine seized up once or twice when I was upgrading the firmware...and I was lost for a bit until I realized that my controller was acting up so I couldn't click out and reboot the machine.

But that doesn't sound like your problem.

No, its not a nightmare. Your PS3 broke.Call up sony to calculate repair costs, or take it to a local repair place, no biggie. Just don't try to fix it up yourself;)

All in all though, you should be happy it lasted you three years with no problems...

Well, the down side for me is that there is no place in Alaska that I can find that repairs PS3's so I'd have to send it away to Sony and they would charge $150 which already half the price of a new one! Just seems like throwing money down the drain. Then again, maybe getting a new one would be doing the same thing! Ugh...not a nightmare but surely a pain in the ****! I just can't think of any other avenues to pursue?

Yea, sometimes you have to cut your losses and figure you got your money's worth when a product breaks and the money it's going to take to fix it can be better spent on a new or good used item. The $150.00 may be almost enough to buy a good used PS3 Slim up there? Or just go ahead and get a new one for $299.00?

I sent an email to Sony describing my problem yesterday. I'm waiting to hear from them before deciding what to do with my PS3. if I can find a cheaper way to get it fixed, I'd rather go that route than buy a new one.

Here is the response I got from Playstaion regarding my problems:

    Hello Paul,

We apologize for any inconvenience your having with you PlayStation(R)3 computer entertainment system. You may need to disable BD 1080p 24hz output and you can find this under video settings on your XrossMediaBar(TM).

*Make sure the discs are clean.

    *Attempt other discs.

*If the disc is scratched you may need to replace the discs.

    *Restore the default settings.

*Enter safe mode on the PS3 and choose option 3

If none of these options assist you in resolving the issue the system may need to come in for service. You may submit your own Exchange Order using our Self Service Exchange for quick and easy processing on the Internet. Please visit our Self Service Exchange page for more information.

Anyone have any thoughts on these suggestions?

I hate when they give you the basic troubleshooting steps even after you've stated that no discs work+you tried multiple discs of different formats+ensured they were either clean and blemish free discs+etc.

I swear, whenever you go through CS it's as if no one took the time to read you're inquiry.

Fortunately it isn't like that on here and a few select places :D

Well, if I was to but a new PS3, I would stuill like to be able to play SACD's on it. I know the newer models arent capable of this out of the box, but do you know if there has been a firmware update to allow this or is this possible via a firmware update?

Well none of Sony's suggestions worked so I guess I have two options: get this one repaired or buy a new one. I already have a Universal Player so I can play my SACD's, I just liked having another SACD player available. I have no idea how much a repair will cost or how long it might take so that might be a deciding factor on whether I just go out and buy a new unit. What do you guys think is my best course of action?
