The Music of Polkfest 2010

OK, a few people asked me about music I had for demos. I promised those folks that I would list what music I had been playing on the forum so they could reference it themselves. Then I thought, why not make it a whole thread? Then everyone else can post what they had playing too.

So here it is, I'll put some stuff up now and anyone else can fill in stuff as well. So if you had a question about what music someone was playing, ask away! If you had music playing and someone asked you about it, post it up!

Just keep it clean, kids. For instance, I had a Rob Zombie song playing while demo'ing the KLH's for doro and someone, I can't remember who off hand, asked what it was. I'll post a link to the video but Rob Zombie is known for being freakish and explicit in his lyrics and videos. So I'll just post a link with, say, an NSFW warning. If you aren't sure what is kosher to post and what should be referenced...well, just the fact that you have some material that you have to ask the question about is your first clue to be better safe than sorry, folks. Follow that lead and we should all be good.

And thanks Patrick C for letting us embed video in this forum! I've been begging for it for a while and we finally got it! YAY! So the rest of you better not screw it up or I'll send lightman your address so he can give you his "special" delivery!

Now, on to the music!

One of the songs I demo'ed the itty bitty computer speakers with was the track "Move" by Jonathan Elias off of his work titled "American River". The music from this work has been used in several commercials, the Olympics and a few TV shows. Jonathan Elias is an accomplished composer of music for cinema. His work appears on more films than I care to list. His "American River" CD is readily available at Amazon.com and you can thank Valspar Paints for using one of his works in their commercial to get the CD back in to print.

    Here is "Move"
    <object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/DNJXxxzTFwg?fs=1&hl=en_US"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/DNJXxxzTFwg?fs=1&hl=en_US&quot; type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object>

I will post more later after I get home from work.

Another one I demo'ed with was another Jonathan Elias track from his "American River" work. It's called "Crossing Rivers". It was the Valspar commercial and the track that got the album back in to print.

There were two more tracks from that album that got a work out as well.

    "Towards Home" and "Wild Colorado".

Overall I would highly recommend adding this album to your collection. It's chock full of amazing music and there is some spoken word work on the album as well. The spoken word tracks are performed by pretty famous individuals such as Johnny Cash, his daughter Roseanne and Kris Kristofferson. The individual tracks can easily stand on their own but the entire album is an amazing journey with all 14 tracks blending in to each other. Highly, highly recommended.

BTW, sounds spectacular on SDAs. Almost haunting and ethereal at times.

Another track that I demo'ed with was Franz Schubert's Piano Sonata d959 in A major (IV) Rondo. Allegretto. This is the original inspiration for the TV show "Wings" theme song. It is a wonderful piano track and causes the pianist to run through roughly 3 octaves of notes, up and down the keyboard. You want to see what a speaker's dynamic range and accuracy are, this track will put them to work! You can pretty much pick up any recording. I have a recording or Artur Schnabel from 1937. Here it is on YouTube:

    <object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/OybbWvyaPUA?fs=1&hl=en_US"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/OybbWvyaPUA?fs=1&hl=en_US&quot; type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object>

If you want to know more about Artur, go here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Artur_Schnabel

Bottom line, one of the greatest pianists of all time. In fact, if you want to have some spectacular recording of Schubert's work, find recordings of Artur Schnabel playing Schubert...ah hell, anything Beethoven too. Any classical music nut should have him in your collection.

One song i heard somebody playing off of my MP3 player at some point was this song called "Midnight Bottle" by Colbie Calliat. Not only is she quite the vision of a Southern California beauty but she's quite the talented singer/songwriter. She has a few hits and I really think she should get more air time because she's not the manufactured sound of her contemporaries. She has a genuine sound to her and her talent and skill should be cherished, not brushed off.

    <object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/-mtCqRU6O7Q?fs=1&hl=en_US"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/-mtCqRU6O7Q?fs=1&hl=en_US&quot; type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object>

This song is on her album "Coco":

Her newest album has a pretty popular track called "Fallin' For You" which is how I found out about her 'cause the GF was playing that song on almost constant rotation. It's a catchy tune. Off of her album "Breakthrough"

This one got a good deal of play time on a few rigs. Lotsa people liked it. This is Gretchen Lieberum. The song is called "You Closer" and it's off of her album "Siren Songs". If you like this kind lounge jazz then pick up this album. I HIGHLY recommend it.

Here's another one that some people liked an asked about. I was actually playing this on Lou's Rodgers on Friday night and it got alot of play time on the KLH's in the early afternoon too. It's from a group called Loquat. The track is called "Swingset Chain" off of the album "It's Yours To Keep". It's got some real nice guitar work and accompanied by keyboard work, it gives the track an ethereal sound to it. Plus, musically and technically, it's dead on. Very good work and the rest of the album is pretty good too. Sounds incredible on SDAs!

Another one I almost forgot about!

Janelle Monae, "Sincerely, Jane" from her debut full length album "Metropolis: Suite I (The Chase)". She's a different sound. The girl has a set of pipes on her too. Incredible range and she'll get better as she matures as well. I first heard her on Oukast's "Greatest Hits" album in 2002. That album got ganked from a friend's car in Philly. But "Big Boi" from Oukast was the one who found her and she toured with No Doubt as well. The girl has some impressive credits. While her work is a little "avant garde", it's primo stuff. Technically accurate and musically captivating. She's worth a listen and her stuff will give your gear a workout for sure! I only had "Sincerely, Jane" loaded in my MP3 player but she has an impressive catalog of stuff.

    Check her out: http://www.jmonae.com/

    Very worth your time.

    Here's "Sincerely, Jane"

One more I only played once or twice. I think it was for cnh. I don't remember.

Anyway, you might recognize it as a commercial song. I forget which one but the GF loved it so of course I had to go find it. So i did and I downloaded it and threw it on the MP3 player. Abernathy had me loading a sweet set from an NPR site. I can't find the link in the history anymore though so Russ, either post it here or tell me what I gotta look for again 'cause I'd like to go find it.

Anyway, Abernathy said what was so special about the music he wanted to share was that they sounded like they were right in front of you. Well, same deal here. This guy is front and center, like he's sitting on a chair in front of you at...well...a coffee shop!

As far as who he is, I don't know much about him. He's a indie musician so his stuff is hard to find. But he reminds me of Cat Stevens without all the Islam and America-hate. Worth a listen. If you download it from anywhere and listen to it on your rig, crank the volume! Those drums and other percussion instruments accompanied with the piano are incredible and clear! A fun listen.

From NPR's website, there is a a GREAT series called Tiny Desk Concert, the one we downloaded was David Rawlings And Gillian Welch. Be sure to listen to the second song, out of this world!

All the Tiny Desk Concerts are on the NRP site, and are FREE on iTunes. I have enjoyed so many of these TDC.

Speaking of Rob Zomibie, here's the video. You gotta go to the link 'cause he's a creepy weirdo and his videos reflect that. Don't wanna post it here for fear of offending someone. But Rob Zombie has some incredible music and tracks that just get to you. They make you head move, the air guitar comes out and if you're driving, your right foot seems like it's made of lead. Rob Zombie songs are like sliding in to hell sideways with your hair of fire yelling "WOOOOOOOOO!!!!! WHAT A RIDE!!!!"

Another one I was playing was Union Underground. The song was "Across The Nation". It was the WWE RAW theme song for a number of years. This should be the "clean" version.

If you don't know anything about Union Underground, they were an industrial metal band that released three albums. A self titled, self-produced album they released in 1997 which got them noticed. Good luck finding it. The second album and first commercial work was "An Education In Rebellion" in 2000. They had 3 or 4 major hits off of it...well, major for the genre. They got noticed by Zakk Wylde I think it was and Ozzy signed them to Ozzfest in 2001. The third album they produced was a collection of live recordings from Ozzfest appearances and other concerts.

They disbanded when the label Portrait folded in 2002 and they decided not to pursue another contract with another label. The members moved on to other projects and as far as I know, they are still working in other bands. Well, except for Memolo who went "born again" like that dude from Korn. But Patrick Kennison is now with Heaven Below, John Moyer is playing bass for Disturbed and Bryan Scott started a band called Cult to Follow. They weren't rock gods by any means. At least not on the level of like an Ozzy or something. But I remember listening to Matt Pinfield on "The Buzz" on an NYC radio station. He was interviewing Ozzy for a promo for a concert in The Meadowlands and he mentioned it because they were on Ozzfest not a couple months before the breakup. Ozzy said he was very disappointed and tried to get them signed to a new label but they wouldn't go for it. I think it was a shame. They were a bright light in the metal world and I think they could have shone much brighter than they did. They were rising stars and went out before they reached the top. People are still finding them and disappointed that they have been broken up for almost 10 years now.

    Anyway, here's the video:

A REALLY annoying song I played, 'cause it gets stuck in your head, I played for one person but I can't remember who it was. A couple other people walked in while it was playing and asked about it and I stopped the evil that it is and put it away. But, for your pleasure, here it is!

    The band: Spiderbait
    The song: Glockenpop

    <object width="640" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/Lsv2S1ANGmg?fs=1&hl=en_US"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/Lsv2S1ANGmg?fs=1&hl=en_US&quot; type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="640" height="385"></embed></object>

If you want to see the original video, go here: http://www.tudou.com/programs/view/AVS0U6ldubM/

Don't worry, the link is OK.

Oh and Spiderbait, disbanded as well even though the Internet says it's only temporary. We all know, if it's on the internet, it MUST be true! They were an Aussie band and they have some killer tracks! They were HUGE in Australia and honestly, if they had gotten some air time in their heyday here, they probably would have a few gold albums. So other tracks from them include:

A remake of "Black Betty" that's better than the original:
    <object width="640" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/nU1VfYYKMDk?fs=1&hl=en_US"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/nU1VfYYKMDk?fs=1&hl=en_US&quot; type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="640" height="385"></embed></object>

A killer track called "Four On The Floor" (won't allow embedding):
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fyl5FptiaUs&feature=related

An annoyingly twisted pseudo-punk track called "Calypso"
    <object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/JRFRTsiTRdk?fs=1&hl=en_US"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/JRFRTsiTRdk?fs=1&hl=en_US&quot; type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object>

A nifty little ballad called "Tonite":
    <object width="640" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/bAx6KuXPIg4?fs=1&hl=en_US"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/bAx6KuXPIg4?fs=1&hl=en_US&quot; type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="640" height="385"></embed></object>

A high energy punk track called "SHAZAM!":
    <object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/5oTx6bFKCuo?fs=1&hl=en_US"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/5oTx6bFKCuo?fs=1&hl=en_US&quot; type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object>

And, my theme song, " 'effin' Awesome"
Gotta go to YouTube for this, language and all that.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_EipkVpkNHY

Cool band to check out. Big, power riffs, anti-establishment lyrics and hard driving songs. If this band doesn't get your blood pumping, you're dead. Call the coroner.

I don't have a link but I know George, John, Ted, Mike, and I were in the Rogers/Anthem room listening to Keb' Mo's Door for a while.

I picked up a couple of Mo's today, in fact!

I'm listening to Mo' on the Rti-A3s that came to me courtesy of the raffle. Maybe not quite as good as the Rogers/Anthem set up. The vocals are certainly more forward than the Brits. But they're very clean.

    Thanks guys!

How could I forget! This one got blasted on the KLH's and I was told it was too loud.

    It's Soundgarden - "Fresh Tendrils"

If you like hard driving rock/metal, this is a killer track. Off the album "Superunknown" it's the quintessential Soundgarden sound complete with Chris' wailing and everything. If you're gonna listen to this, push that volume knob to 11! Who cares about imaging and all that other hooey! This is just wall of sound level stuff here. Probably the best track off of "Superunknown" and a favorite of many die hard Soundgarden fans I know.

One other one I forgot got some play time. Mainly because it's a kickass song from a kickass band. The song is called "Would?" by Alice in Chains. Some may not like AiC but, I don't really care. They broke the grunge scene in 1987 and then with their first independent album dropping in 1989, they got noticed and put out their first major label album "Facelift" which included "Man in the Box", their first major hit. This song "Would?" is from the 2nd album "Dirt" which blew up the charts to number 6 and stuck around a while charting no less than 5 singles from the album.

Everybody says they are grunge but they are really grunge, metal and even acoustic stuff. Very talented bunch of guys. It was a shame to lose Layne to drugs so early in their career. Even to this day, without Layne, they will still sell out a stadium. They are listed as influences to many current metal and rock bands and groups like Stone Temple Pilots regard AiC as rock deities. They are so influential that the band Godsmack took their name from AiC's song "God Smack" on the "Dirt" album. Many other bands, including Metallica, list AiC as one of their inspirations and they have expressed a desire to tour with AiC and even wrote a tribute song to Layne called "Shine". It was supposed to be on the "Death Magnetic" but was left off because the cut didn't make production in time or something silly like that.

Oh and if you want to see a killer concert, Alice in Chains. You get 20,000 of their fans together and the arena is electric, deafening and intense. Honestly, one of my favorite live acts out there. I'm glad they are touring again.
