Thanks to members, I have learned that I needed to do a set up on the player in addition to the AVR.

I did that except I am unsure how to do the trim. I assume trim is the channel volume? How do I get a test tone to know how to adjust this?

The Oppo comes with a Blu-ray of sample music tracks by AIX. On that disc, there is a section for system calibration that has test tones you can use with a SPL meter to ensure that all of your channels are playing at the same level. You can find an analog SPL meter at Radio Shack for about $35, and it is an invaluable tool to have for your home theater. If your AVR has a relative volume control (i.e. 0 = reference level and all other volumes below that are expressed in -dB amounts), set the volume to -10dB and adjust the channel trims so that the SPL meter reads 75dB on all channels (or you can set it to 0 and adjust to 85dB, but the end result will be the same). If your AVR has a numerical volume readout, start the left main test tone and turn volume up until the SPL meter reads 85dB, then note what the volume reading is. That number will be your reference level. Then, turn volume down until the left main reads 75dB and set all other channels so that they read the same level. As long as the levels from each channel match, you're good.

Primarily, what you need to set on the Oppo in your case is the distance for each speaker. This will ensure that the sound from each channel arrives at your listening position at the same time, and also makes sure that your subwoofer is in phase with your other speakers. On the Oppo, set all speakers to small to engage bass management, which should redirect bass below about 80Hz to your subwoofer and pass the LFE channel to it as well.

Just to make sure, you only need to do this if you are using the analog outs of the Oppo. If that is what you are using then fire away.

Speaker Configuration applies to the multi-channel analog audio outputs only. All digital
bitstream and LPCM outputs are unaffected by these settings.

Thanks for the help. Right....that is what I am doing. Guess I'll pull out the discs.

So, even though I need to make settings such as speaker size and distance from the OPPO for the multichannel out, I don't need to do this for the volume levels? Instead, using the AVR (which I have already done for the basic setup).

More than likely, your AVR will handle the channel trims for the multichannel ins, but you can double-check that with the AIX disc's tones. But it definitely doesn't handle the distance and crossover stuff.

Thanks...I just sold two of my AVR's and am waiting on a new amp so I have some power that will make test tones! Mike
