Picked it up today at noon along with La femme Nikita for $14.99 each (cheaper than CC) at BB, Gangs of NY has both DD 5.1 and DTS tracks, the other one only has the DD 5.1 track with enlish dubbed, both has WS 2:35:1, great review from the current Home Theater magazine. Looking forward to July 4 weekend to watch.

I did it. Reviews are mixed. If you are a Martin S fan, then I say go for it. They said the sets alone make the movie.

I just watched it. I had not seen it before and will need to watch again but felt like it was a decent movie. I give it a 3 out of 4.

watch it last night, transfer and picture quality are great. I watch it in theater when it came out, I thought it was great and full of gory details. On DVD, the experience is about the same. At $14.99, it's a worthy buy.I am sorry, I have no opinion on the matter. I am sure you do. So, don't mind me, I just want to talk audio and pie.

Fellas, terrible movie hands down. I can't logically appriciate, other than Day-Lewis, understand how this movie was nominated over Fellowship to the tune of 10 academy awards.

I thought the sets were fantastic and Day-Lewis did a great job, but that's it. The storyline was interesting but the manner in which it was told just didn't cut it for me.Mains: polkaudio RTi70's (bi-wired)

I agree with your sentiments about the academy awards; however, I did enjoy Gangs quite a bit.
But, then again, it's almost getting to the point that if a movie wins an academy award, I won't watch it, because most of their "big" movies are horrible IMO. (ie- adaptation) -

Ya know, I tend to agree with you on this. It seems that a lot of BIG movies today win awards due to politics more than anything else. I don't think this is true across the board, but don't you think that the awards were a LOT more "predictable" 10+ years ago than now?
On another note, just about EVERY single movie Ebert raves or slams is one over which I think the exact opposite. If he slams a movie, I seriously consider going to see it!Mains: polkaudio RTi70's (bi-wired)

i bought this and watched it tonight. so so movie. i give it 2 stars out of 5 stars.
what did suprise me is that in both DD and DTS. .. the soundtrack did not utilize the surrounds much at all. I had to get up three time from my couch to make sure the surrounds were plugged in or not. :mad:PolkFest 2012, who's going>?

I had this movie since the release date, still haven't watch it yet, probably save it for rainny day. For the last 5 days here, temperature was over 100 degree, even through the AC worked very well, It kinda tough to seat and watch a 3 hours long movie.

Rented and watched last night. No replay value in this one. Day Lewis was excellent as the butcher, everyone else seemed to just fill in the spots around him. A bit too long, cut out about 45 minutes and it would have been more enjoyable.

Good take, Ron.
I did like GONY - all performances were decent, the sets were great, the plot didn't ever falter or confuse and it was historically correct. There were several very memorable scenes that stand alone on individual merit.
DDL stole the movie with a spectacular performance and without him it would have been an also-ran. I will watch it again just to appreciate him, and I hope he is most remembered for GONY, The Boxer, and LOTMohicans.
The DTS soundtrack was nice, with the occasional deep, strong, and foreboding synthesized bass line, vocals were were clear and room filling, and surround use was understated (expected in a period film) but effective when used. And the video transfer was very nice - not much noise, good colors tones and black levels, and good detail without edge enhancement.
It's not a flick I will pop in every 30 days to watch though, I'll agree there. Maybe 1X/yr. But overall Bravo - 7.5/10.

To further put Lewis' accomplishment into perspective, note his performance as 'Cecil Vyse,' in the film 'A Room with a View.' The juxtaposition is stunning: on one side of the actor you have a portrayal of brimming masculinity, confidence, the kind of cocksure that's usually reserved for the pugilist's ring. On the other side of the actor you're shown a foppishness so pure, then you are forcibly reddened about the cheeks with an alarming blast of embarrassment. There are no doubt other sides to him, and in short, the guy's a damn good actor.
