Hey, when exactly? I'm going up to sacramento 3rd weekend, and leaving again in the middle of the week, BUT I have maybe one or two days in there. I might be able to show you around even...depends on how much I have to do before I leave again for Texas.
Venice if you are here on a weekend is a freak show. You can trip out on it, do some cheap shopping, street performers, and girls in bikinis if you're into that and if the weather is even half way decent.
Santa Monica Pier is ok, but it is a short walk to the 3rd street promenade. Nicer shopping nicer restaurants, casual atmosphere, etc.
Bar hopping in downtown is cool, but you should do it with a local. Don't wanna get lost there.
Santa Monica and Venice, you won't get lost.

Get as far away as you can. LA sucks.

I'm not L.A. native but here are just a few to consider:

-- Santa Monica Pier/3rd Street Promenade: definately worth a visit, lots of interesting street performers

-- Venice Beach: depends; if you don't mind or actually thrive on an alternative scene of head shops, tatoo parlors, medical marijuana dispensaries, new-age-sound-of-thunder shoppes and the types of crowds from which The Doors and Jane's Addiction arose, go for it.

-- The Getty (museum): fantastic permanent and rotating collections, set beautifully up in the Santa Monica Mountains. Commands a great view over L.A. and The Pacific.

-- Drive up the PCH from Santa Monica to, or past, Malibu...lots of surf action

-- walk along Rodeo Drive area

-- visit Amoeba Records on Hollywood and Highland: recently rated the best record store in the U.S. by Rolling Stone magazine. I guarantee you won't walk out empty handed: Its HUGE!

    food:

If you don't have IN-N-OUT Burger fast food joins in Spokane, you have to drop by one here for a meal: burger, fries, milkshake...and get the largest burger you can handle (i think its called 2 by 4 or something like that)

The Stinkin Rose: I've never been there but its definately a favorite among locals and non-Los Angelinos alike

When we were down in this spring we stayed in Westwood. We enjoyed Santa Monica pier and 3rd st. We also ate at a fantastic sushi place on wilshire near Santa Monica some of the best we've had. We also loved a little Mexican place in Beverly hills. Sorry can't remember either names.

Back in the nineties I had to go to Culver City for training on a system that we used in our hospital,,long story short,,we spent our time riding around just enjoying the numerous sights and many adventures,I particurlary liked the observatory (Griffith park IIRC) and did spend 2-3 days at/in Venice beach--I just fit it ,,but remember I'm, an old guy from the sixties--dunno what it's like today--anyhow,have a fun trip.

That would be the last place in LA I would ever go to....

The best burgers places are In&Out, and the Habit. Santa Monica Pier is a great place to go and see, and driving slowly up and down just a few streets in Beverly Hills is fun if you are into huge houses and excess.

The Petersen Auto Museum is nice to see and no trip to LA would be complete without checking out at least one audio store, I just don't know any that are still open out there as most of the good ones have either closed or have gone custo, install only...

Hollywood Blvd too. La Brea Ave. on the west end to Vine Street or so. I recommend going during the day. More people, but fewer knuckleheads.
Also I've observed that many of my friends who are visiting enjoy places like Universal City Walk. You can do the Universal Tour at the same time.
For a hip/glam atmosephere without the pretentious and boring Rodeo Drive thing, go to Melrose Avenue, starting at Fairfax Avenue on the west end and walk east until the shops run out. Actually, you can do that AND Hollywood Blvd. in one shot very easiy.

Forget Sunset Blvd. and the club scene there unless you have a car, and even that is a hassle in itself.
Stick to Hollywood Blvd....oh! hahaha....just for gits and shiggles, if you want to blow your mind, to to Bar Sinister in the Hollywood Blvd area. I think off of Cherokee.
B&D S&M theme. Very goth. ROFL.
Let me know if there is anything specific you are looking for. I probably know of it or can find out.

some good suggestions guys.. last time I was in LA, Ronald Reagan will still president. :p

Needless to say.. it's been a while. so I am traveling with a friend who has never been to LA.. so I was wanting to pick a few things over a couple days we could do.. mostly during the day.

In n out burger is a for sure.
    Hollywood Blvd
    Melrose Ave
    Rodeo Drive
    Santa Monica
    and maybe Venice
    record or audio store
i'm not much of a museum person... as to me.. it burns up to much time when you're limited. and i would not want to rush though one.

dangerboy are you gonna be there Halloween weekend? If you are, the you MUST hit West Hollywood for their Halloween celebration. Everybody parading around in costume. Many of them truly outrageous.... Music, food. Nooshinjohn I think mentioned Hamburger Habit. They have one of those on the west side of where the celebrating is going on. It's at Santa Monica Blvd. and Robertson Ave. You'll have to plan it because it gets crowded. and be prepared to be there awhile. Hard to get out once you're there.....strike that...not so hard....you'll have to walk out SOUTH from Santa Monica Blvd. to catch public transportation. What part of the city are you staying in?

Did I, a member for life of the Reagan Library, forget to suggest making a trip to Simi Valley? The Library is a beautiful place to see and should make your shortlist for sure.

Simi Valley is actually in Ventura County, NOT Los Angeles. Don't waste your time on the reagan library.

Irvine Spectrum isn't too far from LA, go there and party. Go to Hollywood and OC, so many clubs out there it's crazy. Enjoy the trip. If you have a rental get down to San Diego and party in the Gas Lamp Area and also Pacific Beach. If you want theme parks do 6 Flags.

six flags Magic Mountain is kinda far if he is 1 hr south of the city cuz Magic Mountain is north of the city by about 45 minutes plus.
Too bad you can't be here for halloween. West hollywood is a hoot on Halloween. Some industry peeps and make up artists even go all out and come up with some amazing stuff. it's West Hollywood so alot of guys in drag lol. This one guy used to go dressed as Tippy Hedren in The Birds. Put his hair up 60's style. Had a great make up job where it looked like birds had gouged out pieces of his face. He had on the pumps, and the skirt....and then the best part: He had this wire harness with seagulls attached to it and. He'd run down the street in those pumps, screaming, and the seagulls would be bouncing on the harness behind him.

If you are that far south, think about North San Diego County also (about 1.5 hrs from downtown LA. Carlsbad is great, The San Diego Wild Animal Park is amazing. This area is the most beautiful in the state. If you have time, go to the La Jolla Cove (about two hours south of LA).

+1 for the following in LA:

Gladstones for Fish on the corner Pacific Coast Hwy and Sunset Blvd.
    Santa Monica Pier
    Venice
    Rodeo Drive
    Melrose
    LA Live in Downtown LA
    Universal City Walk

Oh, and please tell everyone you had a terrible time so nobody else decides to come to LA.:D

If either of you are in to the old school Hollywood vibe, stop in to Musso and Frank's grill for lunch or dinner while you are in Hollywood/West Hollywood. At the very least grab a cocktail - the sidecars and martinis are highly recommended. The food is very traditional and generally quite good with some standouts.

As far as theme parks, we loved 6 Flags. Yes, it's a hike. We were staying in Irvine when we went and it was an all day trip, up early and back at 9:00 but man do they have a great collection of roller coasters. My wife, daughter and I love coasters and we rode nothing but coasters while we were there. Standing, sitting, prone, supine, forward, backward, you name it. Even with the fast pass it took all day to get them all.

A lot closer is Knott's Berry Farm. It's really just ok but it does have some decent rides. It also has the advantage of being cheap, not crowded, and it's staffed by surly teenagers like a proper amusement park. Not like the heavily medicated teens at that mouse place.

    Have fun!
