Finally ! new technology for PC's

New PCs could start in just seconds, thanks to an update to one of the oldest parts of desktop computers.
The upgrade will spell the end for the 25-year-old PC start-up software known as Bios that initialises a machine so its operating system can get going.
The code was not intended to live nearly this long, and adapting it to modern PCs is one reason they take as long as they do to warm up.
Bios' replacement, known as UEFI, will predominate in new PCs by 2011.

Not bad, but all my computer's start up and can have a browser/application open within a minute anyway.
If you're waiting for your PC to start up, it's time to perform some maintenance on it!Truck setup

Not really relevant as BIOS boot time has nothing to do with OS load times. -

Another upgrade that has been in the R&D labs in magnetic based RAM. This would allow you to turn off your computer, and then instantly start it up in the same place again and the RAM would not have to reboot. The magnetic nature of the memory would allow you to start where you left off.

Or just go SSD and you'll be up and running in 6 seconds or less. No problems with boot times here, my rig screams.Shoot the jumper.....................BALLIN.............!!!!!

Because Linux is not so user friendly as windows. But I like it. I run it on my server on my home network.

I remember reading something similar to this at least five years ago. One thing they mentioned back then, was that it would almost certainly put an end to overclocking and tweaking as well, since there will be no bios settings to configure.

Don't know why others don't run Linux
Because the software they use won't run under Linux? Gotta earn a living. -
Don't know why others don't run Linux
Because you can't game well on Linux, a lot of major/popular programs don't run/don't run well...and it's a big change from Windows.
Linux is more like Apple in the way you maneuver through the system imo."Dr Dunn admitted that his research could also be interpreted as evidence that women are shallower than men. Depends what software you're talking about exactly.
Fedora 12 (which just released a couple of months ago) is much more user-friendly in that department.ryanjoachim wrote: »Because you can't game well on Linux, a lot of major/popular programs don't run/don't run well...and it's a big change from Windows.

I play games like Battlefield Bad Company 2, Battlefield 2, COD MW, and all my steam games on both Ubuntu and Feodra.Knucklehead wrote: »Its nice to be able to tweak your own configuration to get it "just right".
Got that right
I can understand the whole 'not-so-user-friendly' gig but it's really not that hard at all. Everytime you first install Windows on a PC, the on-screen menus/tutorials talk down on you like you don't even know what a spacebar is....people can't be that dumb. I just leave on Windows Vista for everyone else in the household, either running as main OS or on a vmachine.Truck setup

The fact that you still use Vista (you being anyone you know) makes me sad for you."Dr Dunn admitted that his research could also be interpreted as evidence that women are shallower than men. I don't use it myself, I leave it on for everyone else that uses my computer.
I've never liked it but don't care to change it since it won't be any different from XP Pro (which I also have on the other virtual machine). They both run equally fast since I've got 6gb of DDR3 ram.
I'd get Windows7 but why buy an OS that I won't even use?
So elaborate why you're 'sad for me'...Truck setup

uEFI has been around for a couple of years now in the server world, but my experience is that it certainly isn't faster than a BIOS boot. I'm with everyone else in that your PC will boot much faster with SSD and a thinner OS.
