A Parasound PLD 1100 off of Ebay for a very reasonable price. The difference between a pre and an AVR - greater than what I expected. My music has more impact, depth, and feeling now, as everythiing being run through the AVR sounded much "flatter", if you get my drift .
ON THE HT side - I re-ran the AVRs MACC with the pre's volume at 10 oclock on the dial....only drawback will be I need to remember to put the pre back to the 10:00 position after listening to music. Also, I just ran the pre-outs on the AVR to the video inputs of the new pre. BESIDES the inconvenience of not having true HT bypass, is there any other issue with this setup? (I really wanted a pre with HT bypass, but I couldnt pass on the price and build quality of the PLD 1100...)

Interesting, I've been wondering what the tangible advantage of a pre was. Does the pre only have analog inputs?

I believe only analog inputs. I believe this particular pre is around 15 years old. From the manual:
"Each input has the same input sensitivity and impedance and is compatible
Tuner with any typical analog line level source: DAT, MD, DCC, output of a
    Video Laserdisc or VCR..."

I've done this with no problems, only difference is the benefit of having better sound for 2 ch.

As with everything, it depends. It is possible to buy a pre-amp that is worse than the AVR pre-amp. It depends on the pre-amp, and the pre-amp in the AVR.
Lumin X1 file player, Westminster Labs interconnect cable
Sony XA-5400ES SACD; Pass XP-22 pre; X600.5 amps
Magico S5 MKII Mcast Rose speakers; SPOD spikes

Shunyata Triton v3/Typhon QR on source, Denali 2000 (2) on amps
Shunyata Sigma XLR analog ICs, Sigma speaker cables
Shunyata Sigma HC (2), Sigma Analog, Sigma Digital, Z Anaconda (3) power cables

Mapleshade Samson V.3 four shelf solid maple rack, Micropoint brass footers
    Three 20 amp circuits.

I ask because pre-amps look to be as expensive as full blown avrs with pre-outs. I think you've just muddied the waters for me more ;)

I have been pretty successful by researching the heck out of my next upgrade, then keep shopping for a good price on the used market. The most useful info. I find when I pop something into Google usually comes from this forum...:)

How true...my NAD T765 comes to mind. I sold off my CJ PV14L tube pre along with my Krell SS KAV pre. The NAD was not intimidated at all by the presence of those separates. Two channel still sounds glorious! Not to mention the benefit & flexibility of bass management.

My B&k avr sounds pretty darn good on 2 channel. Is there better in the way of seperates ? Of coarse there is, but then again when comparing pre-amps,there's always something better too. Just have to decide when good enough is actually good enough for you. If I was to ever go seperates again, a passive pre would be on the short list.
    HT SYSTEM-
    Sony 850c 4k
    Pioneer elite vhx 21
    Sony 4k BRP
    SVS SB-2000
    Polk Sig. 20's
    Polk FX500 surrounds

    Cables-
    Acoustic zen Satori speaker cables
    Acoustic zen Matrix 2 IC's
    Wireworld eclipse 7 ic's
    Audio metallurgy ga-o digital cable

    Kitchen

    Sonos zp90
    Grant Fidelity tube dac
    B&k 1420

    Thanks!!!!

BTW I was just teasing in the first place as I love my Pioneer SC-07 for what it does.. But I still prefer seperates...

Is it not OK to rib anyone anymore?? Or is that not politically correct now as well??

Of course ribbing is still allowed. Hell, I'm pretty good at it myself! ;) I didn't mean to come off like I was miffed, I knew you were only joshing. It's all in good fun, just ask the guys that post threads about TT. Man ooh man do I have fun with that.

That's great. Many years ago, I was running a 2ch/HT combo with the same configuration you did. Worked fine and sounded great.

    Enjoy your new pre amp.

Changing from a receiver used as a pre to a dedicated preamp was one of the most noticeable improvements I made to my system. I was using a Harmon Kardon 3490 which was no slouch but the Vincent tube pre really made a difference.
