:confused:Hello Polks,
The family has been house hunting and we found a place that we like adjacent to these towers and would like to make sure if they may cause any health issues ( got 3 + 1 babies) and my POLKbabies. I have searched online and it seemed like pros = cons. Some say there are no evidence and others say otherwise.

clearance from the house is less than 100 yd, ~250FT

Any 2cents is appreciated.

I've been working in the electrical design field for the last six years... First to say there is no medical evidence of health problems due to prolonged living beside high-voltage lines. But personally I wouldn't live there. I do get a headache if I am under those lines for a while. There are crazy magnetic fields around them, and even though it dissipates quite rapidly, I still would not feel comfortable living within couple hundred meters of those lines.

I used to live quite close to high-tension lines (and within the 10 mile radius of the nuke plant that generates the power). There is quite a bit of power that is in the air around them. You will also hear the towers rattle in the breeze. However, no health effects that I know of, unless you're right under them.

We used to take a flourescent tube up at night and hold it up in the air... it would visibly light up. Fun to show people who've never seen it before. They usually walk away a bit quicker than they walked there.

If you're concerned now, you'll always be wondering about it if you buy the house.

For a short term, there may not be any serious issues. Long term with small children, I would err on the side of caution. However; put a big coil in your yard and you may get free electricity.

There was info about this a few weeks ago on the news. There is NO evidence they said that show problems accruing with people around radio waves or wireless signals. I think the same is said for electrical towers.

I would'nt worry about health issues, though it being a prevalent thought, resale is the thing as Dizz mentions,

in this market, I'm sure there are other choices out thee, unless this is your dream house or something.

How's the AM radio reception there? That's may layman detector kit.

Otherwise, assuming there are no potential health issues, resale is the next bigger concern.

You'll get more exposure standing next to your microwave or sleeping with the electric blanket turned on all night. Just remember that electricity in North America is generated at 60hz, the same bass frequency most people naturally hear. If 60hz wave energy was bad, wouldn't we all be jacked up???

If you only lived that close to the substation...just think...you'd ALWAYS be the first one back in power after a storm!

I have no comment on the validity of the statements in this link from the EPA. Make your own judgement to the risks or resale value of the home.

The house I grew up in was within a few hundred yards of high tension wires.Other than being a complete schizo and sociopathic :)I have had no health issues attributable to them.

This would be a great read for you , it gives both sides ( With links ) of the issue.

One thing not mentioned much , but can be annoying ...is the noise.

Most of the time the towers are silent, but if you live in an area that gets much moisture in the air they can be very loud.

One of my friends in Salinas lived close to some towers , the sound those towers made when the evening mist/fog came in was deafening. The mist/fog in Salinas is extreme though , I would leave San Jose on my R1 in 80 degree sunny weather.....as soon as you get over the hill it's 60 degrees overcast and so much moisture in the air that my leathers would be dripping water.

So I would go to the property in the evening and early morning if it's in a place that gets heavy moisture without rain, just to see if there was a noise issue before buying.

Remember that the people that complain about the towers are the same ones that tie on magnets for sore joints and other stuff. Kind of odd it's bad overhead but ok tied on. I'm of no help sorry.

I'd be worried about perception as much as anything else.

Even if you're 100% positive there are no harmful issues there, good luck convincing prospective buyers of that in the future if they already have pre-conceived notions that it is bad...

I don't think the E&M waves from the high voltage wires will harm you because the power decreases with 1 over the distance squared. I think you would get more E&M waves by wraping youself in an electric blanket.

However, your resale value maybe the real issue because if people believe these wires cause harm then they won't consider the home.

To me the wires look ugly in the back yard and that would be part of my decision.

From an investment perspective, find another house. High power transmission lines make for a longer, more difficult, and less profitable sale.

Health-wise, I've never seen a report show correlation, but as a parent, protecting our children is paramount.
