Rti a5 vs Monitor 70
I am putting together a HT and I was wondering whether it would be better to get the Rti a5 towers with the csi a6 center or the Monitor 70 towers with the cs20 center. Any thoughts?

Do the Rti's still sound as good even with less woofers.

If it's for movies, i'd definitely go Rti's, if it's Music i'd go monitors. Rti's have better clearer highs, monitors have a little more punch and low end to them but less detailed tweeter. It's all about personal preference and what sounds best to you. Either way you should be happy with the result.

The number of drivers does not indicate the quality of the sound. Try to find a showroom where you can do an a to b demo."They who can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety."

I would agree with this. Both speakers also sound better with an external amp. For music with a good amp, the Monitor 70 is the clear winner for me.
The RTi cabinets are much nicer so they definitely win out on aesthetics.
I had the 60's running off my receiver and was satisfied, but I feel like these Rti's are a little more power hungry and i'm on the hunt for an amp now. The monitor 70's might be the same way though. -

I found that my old RTi8's sounded signficantly better with more power. Though all speakers will see big improvements from separate amplification, once you throw more power at the 8's, it gives the mid/upper bass more grunt, and creates a a more full-bodied sound-stage. It seems that the 8's are efficient to the extent that it takes very little power to push the tweeter to high DB's, but it takes a bit more power to get the mid-bass drivers moving. A lot of the complaints of the RTi's being overly bright, I suspect come from a lack of quality amplification. My System Showcase!

I've been using the Rti8s with CSi5 for over a yr now and agree with everything that you said, until the last sentence. I've driven them with Sony ES AVR, top of the line HK 7000 AVR, HK 5800 AMP, and Denon 1709 AVR. they're still bright, especially with the Denon to the pt that I couldn't even listen music for more than 30 mins. The HK stuffs and Sony AVR are OK, but still on the bright size. Bi-amp the 5800 AMP to push 160WPC to each doesn't help neither -

I wanted to sell my Yamaha and get a HK or marantz to tone them down a little, i'll eventually go with a separate amp but for now I wanted to keep it cheap and only have to add a little $ after I sell my 1800, instead of having to shell out several hundred-a thousand for an amp right now. Do you think a HK 3600 or Marantz 7002 would be enough to run them at a decent volume and tame the sound a little? -

Oh I definitely agree. More power and warm components will tame, but not eliminate the brightness. The RTi's are by nature a bright sounding speaker...this is the defining characteristic that makes them great for HT (and less ideal for music). My System Showcase!

I'd snag a used or refurbed HK AVR 254My System Showcase!

The rti8s are easy to push. don't know about the AVRs you mentioned, but 50 honest WPC is enough and i know HK and Marantz are very honest with their ratings.
but seriously, if you want to listen to music as often as movies, you won't like the Rti8s. Monitor 70 is a much better choice -

I use it for mainly for movies and video games, and some occasional music. But when I say music it's playing through my Xbox while I play Halo or just listening to pandora on my Ps3, just casual listening so I don't need anything too crazy. I agree my monitor 60's sounded better for music but overall i'm so glad I went with these.
