I have an old oinker tx4500 that has been a great little receiver. It has pushing my monitor 10bs for a while and has done well despite its lack of power. I just got another pair of 10bs and the plan was to use the preamp and power both pairs with another amp producing 150-200 watts continuous power per channel My problem is that last night i hooked up one pair to the A speakers and the other one to the B output. Sound was great on phono and fm(one day ill get a cd player). After about four hours of play, the sound cut down to a trickle. All four are still being powered, but barely. During this time the volume was never past 11 o'clock and the amp developed no more heat than it did just driving the first pair. With the one pair it would drive clean until about two o'clock, but I never pushed it any harder and it never cut out on me. I tried it this morning before work and it has the same problem on fm or phono. No distortion, but 1/20th the power. All lights on receiver still work. I don't have any experience working on amps, but i do have some skills with my hands. Does anyone have any suggestions on what it may be? Any help would be appreciated, as i love the receiver and was only going to use its power supply for another two weeks. Hopefully the preamp will still work no matter what. Thank you for any help you may have, as i am a lost pilgrim without my guiding light of musical bliss.

Good to hear you got it up and running again. Just don't crank it too high while you have both pairs running off the same amp. You're cutting your impedance by half.

    Happy belated b-day!

Thanks organ. The birthday is tomorrow though. Besides the preamp, one reason i like the 4500 so much is that it has a, b, and c speakers. I just hope it will push my 5jrs well for my back patio after i get an external amp for the monitor 10s.

My bad, here's a happy b-day in advance:).

I didn't know they made them with a third set of outputs. Wow. I wonder if they all connect to a single stereo amp, or does the receiver have multiple amp sections?

Gonna see how the onkyo works as a preamp. Ive got an audiosource amp three on the way. I know they are cheap, but i have read good things about them. The birthday was wild. Smoked boston butts and music go well together. Also no one damaged my equipment!!!

Good to hear. I haven't heard AS gear but they have a very good rep and value for the $. Let us know how it sounds.

About the last thing I would call an Onk TX-4500 is a "little" receiver. I have one of those also, and was considering it for my garage rig, but it takes up too much workbench space. For 55wpc, it's a moose. Onkyo didn't know the word "little" until just a few years back. I have a Onk TX-7000 if you want to see "little". And a Yamaha CR-1020.

I so want that TX-7000, but I just can't swing it with my other purchase and all the other costs with PF 2010. It looks like a real beast.
    Ludicrous gibs!

Yes, the "little" remark was kinda tongue in cheek. However, those hungry monitors just crave power and they work the onkyo pretty hard. I have heard some good things about the preamp in this series, so I'm anxious to try it out. I will let everyone know how my ultra low budget system sounds when I get it up and running. That receiver can really make my 5jrs sing though. I can get almost as much volume and clarity out of those as i do with my 10bs. This is also a phono only setup, so I'm not working with a great signal. Should I get a separate phono preamp?
