My amps on my powered Tyler subs are inadequate..

And since I will have no luck selling the amps I am sure -- I was looking to get an opinion.

I was thinking about mounting some terminals on the back that the driver would directly connect to for passive operation, then another set of terminals beside it the amp connects to...

So if I want to run passive I can use one set and if I want to run active I can just jump them together...

Thoughts?

Do you have the Dayton Audio plate amps from Parts Express?

They put out around 500W realistically, and you would be better off modding the amp instead of using an external amp.

I have the HPSA1000 and it's enough to knock pictures off the wall!

Does Tyler use plate amps in their subs? If so, I guess they would have chosen an adequate power amp in the first place but you can sure use the sub as passive with external amp.

The worries is that you'll bottom out the sub fairly quickly and shorten the life of the driver if pushing too hard on it. You never know when a sub reach Xmech with high power amps.

It's best to buy another sub or use a 2nd sub than modding it. But if you want to mod, drill 3 holes in the back of your sub.

1 hole for a two position switch that will disconnect the plate amp from the sub driver when you use it with external amp. 2 holes for the binding posts.

If you want to use the sub as active with built in plate amp, set the switch in one position so the external amp is disconnected automatically and you don't need to change things around or remove wires.

If you want to use an external sub, set the switch in the other position so it'll disconnect the plate amp and use the external amp.

I still think you should buy a 2nd sub or a better sub than using external amp with your Tyler sub since it's fairly easy to bottom out a sub with high amp power for the heavy bass tracks.
