My dad passed earlier this year and had a nice selection of camera equipment. I thought I would give his hobby a try but now think it would be one to many and do not really have the time. I am looking for a hassel free web site like audiogon to get an idea of value and try to sell.

Going to get the out today and list and take pics to see what I have...any input would help...thanks Ron

It depends on what the gear is. For instance, if it is film gear...there is no market unless it is rare. There is a company in Atlanta, www.keh.com that is THE used camera broker in the US. If it has any value at all they will know it. As far as digital equipment. Places like www.Adorama.com and www.bhphotovideo.com will buy used equipment. Depending on the brand, there are brand specific websites (like Club Polk) that have classified forums to buy and sell gear. For Canon gear the place to go is photography-on-the.net/forum and for Nikon, ...www.nikonians.org/. Some independent forums may be of help like www.fredmiranda.com and www.photo.net. There is always ebay and craigslist...but they are not necessarily good or reliable.

Shank offered some good advice. Like he said, it all depends on what you have.

Large format still has some value. Don't over look the tripods, lenses and filters. They have crossover value to digital. Even some of the better bags and cases bring good money. List all of the above items individually to max your money. Package deals may slight you a bit.

Helen, you have a good company and I have ordered several items from Adorama...and as you can tell I gave you a recommendation. Your email address to contact you would be sufficient...the rest is too much like advertising on this forum…which is not allowed.

Adorama is a great store but I would not turn to them to price used camera gear. Take a look at the going prices on Ebay, which is a very liquid market for camera stuff. Even if you do not want to sell there, you should be able to learn what the going rates are for various pieces of gear.

The thing about Adorama and B&H is that you know you will get paid with the least amount of trouble. Are you going to get top dollar? Of course not. Kinda like the difference between selling a car to CarMax or listing it on AutoTrader. It all depends on whether or not you want to sell it now and be done with it or go through the hassle of listing it wherever...and hope you get substantially more after going through the hassle of listing, negotiating, getting paid, shipping and then worrying if the buyer will make a damage claim, etc...etc...etc.

Listing is easy on eBay even if you haven't done it in a while. There's no hassle with "negotiation" as it's an auction site. You don't usually ship until you get paid. If Adorama buys it you still have to pack and ship and worry about damage to the item.

On eBay you DO have to worry about some guy stiffing you after the fact. But eBay's buyer protection program is much better than the past.

I would suggest using Adorama if you just want an easy place to dump your gear. You could probably sell it all at once.

How much gear do you have? Is it an "outfit" that could be sold all at once? Or all kinds of different gear requiring multiple auctions on eBay? Might play into your decision

The original post was asking the value of the gear. Hands down I would look at completed auctions on eBay. It's probably the most liquid used camera market in the world.

    Two more:

Another major player in buying and selling used photo equipment is KEH: www.keh.com
We've bought several pieces of film camera equipment from them with very good results. No affiliation.
(EDIT: Just to be clear, B&H is also excellent. I have heard very good things about Adorama, too, but haven't had any dealings with them that I can recall)

Another very good site with lots of information on some things: http://www.kenrockwell.com/

I have nothing but good things to saw about Adorama and BH photo. I made my first purchase from Adorama back in '85. The days when web wasn't as it is now. You got the photography mags, found the ads and then spent some serious time circling items and reading small print. Orders and questions were all done by phone.

I have purchased from both companies for years and never had any issues that weren't dealt with immediatly and to my satisfaction. Some days I miss the time I spent reading and comparing in the ads finding the best deal and also gfathering lots of good knowledge.

Txcoastal, how about offering the equipment here at Club Polk and give us members first crack at them?

He can't. He doesn't have the required number of posts to participate in the FM. Maybe you should PM him if you are interested in any of the gear.
