Update: The Oppo has it's own volume control, so I plugged it in directly to my amp and I was blown away. There was more clarity, transparency, and it was more three dimensional. It really got me thinking, if I even need a preamp....

My preamp adds body, weight and bloom, but my source already has those characteristics, so it's just adding more of what I already have. It became clear that my preamp is adding distortion instead of helping to reveal the music.

So last night I contemplated selling my preamp (cough) and getting a Placette Passive preamp. The reason I still need a preamp is because I need an output for my sub and because I have multiple sources (cable tv, blu ray, music). I'm looking for the newer Placette version with 3 inputs/2 outputs to give it a try.

I didn't think I'd ever sell my Modwright preamp, but I don't need it anymore with my new source.

Also the GIK Tri traps are AWESOME! I put them in the front corners of the listening room and it has tightened up the bass and revealed more mids that were being over-shadowed with the bass. I'm getting some panels next.

Good to hear back Ern. If possible I would get the passive and give it a go for a bit before turning loose of the pre.....You gotta have stuff to try stuff...

    Agreed.

A downside to not using my preamp is that crappy recordings sound crappy. The pre would dress up poorly recorded cd's so that they didn't sound as bad. I just listened to an old Journey cd that is thin sounding, bright, no soundstage, etc. The pre would make cd's like this more listenable.
