This looks interesting-I'm not familiar with The Orb, but most certainly am with David Gilmour. Due for release on Oct 12th, I may just preorder this. It's available on CD and 180g Vinyl.

Metallic Spheres is a collaboration between David Gilmour, the voice and guitar of Pink Floyd, and The Orb, the renowned British ambient/house collective. Together, they created a two-part sonic mixture in a range of styles combining David's unique guitars and The Orb's crafted sound manipulations.

Mentioned is the use of 3D60 surround sound on an extra CD on the deluxe version. Interesting-I have to check this out:
http://www.3d60.co.uk/
3D60™ is a new sound production process created specially to deliver an immersive, widescreen listening experience to headphones.

Listening in 3D60™ takes sound on from ordinary stereo into new dimensions of height and space - a three dimensional world of 360 degree surround sound.

Unlike conventional surround sound based on multi-positioned loudspeakers, 3D60™ gives unlimited spatial audio with sounds coming from all around; in front, behind, at different heights and even from overhead or below.
I wonder if it would work on SDAs

When I bought 250 cds, I had to listen to most since I didn't know the groups. One of them was ORB. I liked it or them, maybe I have two of them. The one I remember is UF-ORB.

I kept 100 discs and sold and gave away the rest.

I think this Gilmore and ORB will be great.;)

I just listened to the demo on the web site, very impressive use of spatial recording! I'm not much for headphones, but if it translates to speakers, it could be a nice addition.

That ought to be interesting, but keep in mind the 360 thing is intended for headphones. Certainly worth a try though.

I ordered my copy directly through the "Metallic-Orb" web site. I guess they have more play with the shipping date. It was shipped via UPS from Tennesee. It won't actually show up until the 13th. Oh well, so much for getting it on the release date. Hopefully you guys will get it on the 12th.

Just caught The Australian Pink Floyd Show here live last Sat evening. Granted, while it's not the real deal, these guys are good - and sadly, about as close as the vast number of us are likely ever gonna get to experiencing a Floyd show live from here on out. I'm grabbing this disc soon also - very excited to head what David's been up to post OAI. Cheers!

I listened to the 3D60 disc earlier this evening on the SDA SRS 3.1TL's and I was impressed. There are some parts that are truely amazing. The eighteen minute mark on track one ("Metalic") is one that stands out in my mind. Overall an amazing SDA experience and one that all SDA owners should try.

Musically, there a few spots I thought were a little repaticious. While they are considered an "ambient" band, I would say they are more of a techno-ambient sound. Definately not ambient like Brian Eno is (IMO). Overall though it was very good. I can recommend it.

Out of curiosity, have you compared the two mixes (3D60 and original)?

I got a "free" copy of this album a few days ago and listened to the original mix on my SDA's last night and was really impressed with the enormous soundstage and am wondering if maybe the 3D60 mix is even better? If so, I may have to purchase the deluxe edition on Amazon.

By the way, I would definitely agree with the comment about this being repetitious in a few spots (particularly the stuff where there just seems to be birds chirping, water dripping, etc.). Also, I could have used a bit more Gilmour guitar stuff front-and-center, instead of all in the background and part of the "ambience".

Overall, though, it's still a cool mix to listen to, especially on the SDA's, because of the soundstage :)

I have not done a comparison yet. I just recieved the album yesterday and at 50 minutes I didn't want to hear it twice in a row. I will do a comparison at that 18 minutes mark on the metalic track to do a comparison and I will let you know though. Sound good?

Yep, sounds great. I completely understand what you mean on the length, though - it is somewhat of a daunting task to sit down and listen to the whole album (or even one of the 30 minute "sides") at once, which is why I'm not sure if I want to drop the coin on it yet. If the 3D60 mix is really awesome, though, then I will... mainly for demo purposes. It's not that the album isn't good, it's just that you really have to be in the mood to listen to an album all the way through like this.

I'll look forward to hearing your impressions - thanks!

Now that I think about it, (not having had the chance to listen or compare yet), since the 3D60 is meant for headphones, it is probably very well suited for SDA's vs. standard stereo speakers. Reason being the SDA 'effect' essentially results a more true stereo, like the result with headphones where there is less crosstalk from the right speaker to the left ear and vice versa.
I can't wait until tomorrow when I'll finally get a break and have a chance to just sit down, relax and listen.

    Received mine from Amazon yesterday.

I've listened to both CDs; the 3D60 does sound different on the SDAs. I not sure yet that it is better. I wish I had two matching CD players to switch back and forth without changing discs, which requires one to remember and then compare.

The real 3D60 experience is still w/headphones IMHO.

My impression was I did get more soundstage with the SDAs using the 3D60 CD, but the headphones make it more spherical, like cathedral sound, truly all around. I ran the speakers and headphones concurrently and the experience was still nicer when I put the headphones on. The speakers still left me in just a nice big slice of the sphere.
