Blu Rays without Lossless Audio

This kind of irritates me, but I've noticed that not all Blu Rays have the lossless audio. The HD video is fine and all, but I buy them for the lossless audio. I guess I'll have to start checking the package before I buy.

The latest offender is Fringe - Season 2, which I picked up on the way home yesterday.

On an unrelated note, Fringe starts up again next week I think, so if you're behind it's time to get caught up, season 2 came out yesterday on DVD and Blu Ray.

Wtf, Fringe doesn't have a 5.1 soundtrack on the blu-ray?

    5.1 doesn't guarantee lossless audio.

Yeah, but at least the stock 5.1 tracks on Blu-ray are typically at the max bitrate, so they're still better than DVD. Still, I do agree, because this irritates the hell out of me as well. Came across that with my recent purchase of Unforgiven on BD.

Interview with a Vampire is another one with only Dolby Digital 5.1, no Dolby True-HD 5.1 audio:mad:. I did not buy it, even for $7.99.

I noticed it on Unforgiven as well when I rented it. I immediately spent a few minutes checking my settings instead of looking at the box for the movie.

Just check out reviews on sites like blu-ray.com before you buy or rent. They not only list audio options but tell you if the lossless track is any good or not. They aren't all created equal...lots of lazy studios out there when it comes to mastering blu-ray audio.

What I find even more irritating is when a foreign movie released in the home country with a stellar 7.1 lossless track only makes it to this country with a 5.1 lossy in English. Lots of animation titles get the native language lossless pulled because they think we want to listen in English and don't think it's worth it to put a lot of effort into a quality dub...

Agree with cheddar, Blu-ray.com is a very informative site with reviews to let you know which movies have a kick **** audio track or not.

Lossless audio is equally as important as 1080p video, and I will not buy a Blu-ray disc unless it has lossless, period!

That was the major factor in buying my HD-DVDs. I would not buy one if it didn't have lossless, unfortunately, most all HD-DVDs did not come with lossless but only DD, or DD+, so my collection was very, very small. Good thing I guess.
    If...
Ron dislikes a film = go out and buy it.
Ron loves a film = don't even rent.

After reading some reviews on Blu-ray.com about 3 certain bluray movies I was interested in,(Underworld,Ultraviolet,Casino Royale)with the LPCM audio , they gave them 2 thumbs up and now that I've watched them,I agree. all 3 movies sounded great__ on my system. Read the reviews first before buying LPCM audio blurays:)

Believe it or not... the collector's edition of Casino Royale that has 24-bit Dolby TrueHD instead of the 16-bit LPCM of the original release actually sounds better.

Either way, as long as there's lossless audio of some flavor, I'm in. I wasn't heartbroken by Unforgiven not having it, mostly because the elements of that soundtrack don't seem like they'd benefit much anyway (which is why I paid $7.99 for it even though I knew it was DD only).

Lol, I made the mistake of buying the "Interview With A Vampire" bluray before checking the reviews on Bluray.com , so I was pretty disappointed with the weak audio quality. Now I know better.

It's a shame that the discs have so much room on them and yet they ignore quality audio because "most people don't have speaker systems" or whatever their reasoning is. I'd much rather have lossless than a silly extra i'll never watch, or a second language track for that matter.

Most of the studios have adopted a lossless audio policy for all of their new releases, at least as far as movies are concerned. The one studio that was most guilty of lossy audio tracks on early releases was Warner Brothers. They have since adopted the lossless plan. There are really only a limited few titles that have just dolby digital tracks including Unforgiven, Interview with a Vampire being just a few. Another title that does not have lossless, but will soon be in my collection due to it's great video transfer is Blazing Saddles.

Watched "Tears Of The Sun" on BR last night and was fairly pleased with the 5.1 LPCM audio track. Just had to bump up the volume 4or 5 dbs more than usual.

That movie has some outstanding surround sound. I ran it on my 9.1 Height setup, and it seriously sounds like you're in the jungle. Excellent disc!

A little off topic and it doesn't really matter but I haven't noticed anything coming out in Dolby true HD anymore. It seems everything is DTS HD MA. Not that I think it matters just wondering what happened to Dolby.

I watched "The Prestige" Bluray the other night with the LPCM 5.1 audio. Sounded pretty decent but be warned, when the action starts, be prepared to be slammed:) Not sure whats going on with Dolby TrueHD, maybe Dolby is working on a new improved audio format with 9.1 or 11.1 in mind????
