Glad to see that Mangini was selected. I am looking forward to hearing how they sound without Portnoy. But I do hope that he is back in the band in the near future.

I'm sure everyone who cares already knows, but Mike Mangini is the new drummer for DT.

Good, I'm glad that's settled. Now everyone can quit suggesting Dave Lombardo and Gavin Harrison switch bands.  They need to stay right where they are! lol I don't think either would have been a good fit anyway...

Portnoy's not 'coming back', that ship has sailed.

Mangini is not someone you bring in for a while to replace another guy, he's someone you bring in as a permanent piece. Mangini is a better 'technician' than Portnoy, but Portnoy has a certain style and feel that works well with their music, but in watching the audition videos, I think Mangini will be up to the task.

    Well said.

Mangini is a versatile drummer, more so than Portnoy IMO. He is a very gracious guy, and should fit right in with DT, as they are all fan friendly.
I think they got the right guy.

I kind of hope Portnoy finds a home with Avenged Sevenfold. (age difference be damned) Now he knows how Tony Levin felt when they did LTE. lol

I'm fairly certain the gig with Avenged was just a temporary thing, he hasn't been with them in quite some time now. He's got some cool stuff on the horizon though, am anxious to hear some of the stuff he's been a part of.

What has he been up to?

Honestly, I'm not sure which I'm more excited to hear - the next DT album with Mangini or Portnoy's next project. Hopefully, both will be awesome!

Well, here's your first chance to hear the new Dream Theater sans Portnoy. it's not a bad track, sounds like it could have fit right next to Nightmare on their last album. Mangini does a spot-on Portnoy performance on the drums, which is nice in some respects but hopefully the rest of the new album (2 months away) will see him bring in some more of his own flare.

I believe one of thier keyboardists Derek Sherinian severed ties with DT a couple of years back, and look wheres hes at now, the keyboardist for Black Country Communion, jamming with Jason Bonham, Glen Hughes, and Joe Bonamassa, I wouldnt call that to much of a fall from grace.

I like it. Sound has a better mix. That was the biggest problem with Portnoy (aside from his godawful singing) was his mixing and production. They never had a good sound after he took that over after Falling Into Infinity.

Their last couple albums sounded the same basically, but this sounds "fresher". It sounds like theyre aiming more to the symphonic metal sound which is absolutely fine by me cause I love that stuff.

I think Mangini will work out very well. Portnoy pretty much pioneered prog drumming and made it as big as it is now but Mangini is more "acrobatic" and will be able to keep up with Ruddess and Petrucci a little better.

As for Mangini being permanent, he's a session drummer. He's played with all the big names but never stayed anywhere too long. He may not be with DT more than an album or two.

Sherinian landed on his feet because he was already a very well accomplished musician before joining DT and had played with a lot of big names already so he didnt have far to fall.

Me too. Portnoy said that for their 20th anniversary tour they invited Moore to come onstage and perform Space Dye Vest with them just for old times sake and for the DVD. He declined. He must really hate them.
