I'd rather go forward in time rather than backward. One hundred years ago, some states still had systems of "peonage" - debt slavery, women couldn't vote, and we still had public hangings. Also, I'm quite sure we are still the most prosperous country with our GDP dwarfing the runner up, Japan, by around 9 trillion dollars. However, we are starting to have wealth imbalances with a significant shrinkage of our middle class. But attempting to do anything about this makes you a socialist... The rich get richer.

Has anyone ever checked this via their last couple of tax returns:

Definition: Actual income tax paid divided by net taxable income before taxes, expressed as a percentage.

...and the poorer gets richer and can then possibly afford a little more than a canoe or cayak ;) Robin Hood had it right, take the money off the rich so the poorer can get richer. The politicans get it all wrong, all backward! I guess they didn't get to school long enough (school of life that is?) ;)

If a by-product of the wealthy getting wealthier is shifting significant amounts of middle class earners to lower middle class and poor, then yep, I'm all for that. Do note that my statements do not carry any angry conotation to them. Even if I made billions, I would not argue tax cuts for the wealthy while the middle classers can't afford their home payments due to a trashed economy. I argue to help those who need it. I view "us" as a collective people where no one gets sh$t on. So right now, the middle class need help, let's help them. If in the future, the upper class are struggling in some manner, let's help them out too. Government is for the people, no one excluded. Also realize when I say "help," I don't mean hand outs, I am referred to laws and regulations that favor those in need for the time's when they need it, nothing more. It's simple really, help your neighbors - it's a little sad we need a government to force others to help those in need.

Well buddy, I agree to a certain extent. In recent months (over 2 years actually) I've been struggling financially (BTW things are really starting to looking up) and I didn't rely on the government to bail me out nor did I want them too, THAT'S NOT WHAT THEY ARE HERE FOR NOR SHOULD IT EVER BE. However what has kept us from drowning is the graciousness and generosity given us by my family, friends both here and privately, my neighbors, churches, non-profit organizations, etc. I don't want the government involved in my personal issues except of course SSI and Medicare which I paid into for over 35 years. Big government is not the answer to our problems as a nation BIG government is the problem IMHO! Ronald Reagan once pretty much said that and IMHO he was dead on balls accurate with that statement.

True, but in the times I've been in where even food was hard to come by I found, there are hundreds of churches, non-profit organizations and more entities which will supply food to those in need, more food than anyone could possibly need, one just has to inquire about them and be willing hustle around to get to them on the days they make the food available.

The government should not be involved in this! We hustled around to as many of the above stated entities as possible in the past two weeks and our cupboards, fridge and freezer are more full than when we were finacially well off. There are even meat trucks that come to our area twice a month that give $250 worth of food.

Thanks for the kind words Bro.

I didn't think being in debt a left or right issue, but a people issue. No generation wants to see the next robbed of the opportunities it enjoyed.

I certainly didn't say that. IMHO the government needs to be small and stay out of our daily lives and not think they know what's best for us and are going to ram down our throats how to live it no matter how effed it is, man I hate that.
