Bagpipe practice chanter-suggestions?

I've been into bagpipes as long as I could talk, my grandfather played them way back when he used to march in the Mummer's parade--such an awesome instrument!!!

Everything I've read says to learn on a Practice Chanter first and foremost so I'm looking for suggestions on what brand and supplier I should be looking at as well as what material to get (Rosewood, Blackwood, plastics). Likewise, what should I stay away from? I found some on Amazon but they have very few reviews available.

I've found that I have no musical performance talent, but I still want to try without dumping a load of money for something that might not pan out so I'm looking to keep it under $100, preferably under $50 if I can find a good bang for the buck deal.

Thanks

A lady in my friends neighborhood started trying to learn the pipes. She always practiced on the back porch. After several visits from the local PD,she gave up.Moral to the story....keep your pipes inside and you probably won't get arrested for disturbing the peace!!!!!
If you can't hear a difference, don't waste your money.

I hear you, however learning to play the pipes is supposed to be with the practice chanter-much quieter and no bags or drones. Apparently playing the pipe is complex-a lot going on at once--and attempting to learn to play the full set without first learning on a practice chanter will likely result in failure.

Mike, how about Uilleann pipes? They sound awesome and it is much smaller and seems easier to use and learn as well as quieter than bagpipes.

BTW when my son returned from Ireland, he brought back a CD of a Uilleann master playing with a huge church pipe organist and it sounds really, really good.

Check out this google search result link on the "Irish Bagpipe."

Hey after you get good, perhaps you can play the passage by AC/DC and post it!

Nothing in this world does justice to "Amazing Grace" like bagpipes. It always brings me to tears.

This is kinda bizarre, but it's something that I've been trying to look into as well, with similar lack of success. If you come up with anything, you should pass the info along. :)
