DIY sub gain setting

Getting ready to build a subwoofer for my brother's workplace and had a question about setting the gain on the plate amp. It's a fairly decent sized room, bout 33x17'. Purchased the Dayton Audio 500w plate amp and will prolly go w the HF series 15" Dayton sub.

I got the amp the other day in the mail and have been playing with it on my sub, a 12" Kicker solobaric car sub. Ultimately it will be hooked up to a Yamaha 663. My main concern was setting thus gain to prevent clipping. The amp has a green status light that shifts towards red in the event of clipping. What method should he use to set AVR sub out levels and plate amp gain?

The ghetto way to do it is to play the loudest song you have(something like 'confusion' from the Blade soundtrack) at your main speakers max level. Now bring up the gain on the sub until it begins to clip. Then back off a tiny bit so that it doesn't clip at all. Usually, if you get it to clip and turn it down to exactly where it stops, it'll start clipping again as the amp warms up.

A better way is to just set it by ear and watch the clip light on a few test tunes or test movies.

Tried essentially that "ghetto" way, but ran into it clipping before it was even moderate SPL. The sub out on my receiver has a huge range, so essentially i'm dealing with 3 "volumes:" AVR volume, Subwoofer out level and Amp gain.

Perhaps i just didn't spend enough time playing with it..

And wow, going from a ~200w amp that i usually have my sub on to this ~500w plate amp really revealed some air leaks in my box... lol

It shouldn't be clipping out at a moderate level. Gain and level on sub and AV should both be below or at half.
The PE amps take a 4 ohm load. What's the Kicker rated at? Might be your problem if it's 2 ohm and trying to push it

    It's a dual 2ohm wired at 4.

So what does that say about my setup that the auto-calibrate always sets my sub to like 75%? lol One of these days I'll get a proper amp for my own...

you can't use the auto on the receivers for subs It never works
It's probably clipping out because the input signal is too high if it's at 75%

lower the receiver's level to about 40 or 45% and then set the SPL with the sub's volume knob
