TEMPE, Ariz. -- An 81-year-old Tempe man attending his granddaughter's wedding in Virginia was beaten to death over the weekend.

The bride is from the Valley but went to college in Virginia where she met her now husband. So, George Leroy Baker III left for Virginia, excited to see his granddaughter get married. Unfortunately, he never made it home.

Baker was attacked Sunday as he stepped outside his granddaughter's wedding to get something to eat as family members continued the celebration.

Three teenagers were arrested Tuesday and charged in connection with Baker's death.

According to Lynchburg, Va., police, the motive might have been male bravado as one of the suspects was overheard saying he would hit the first person he saw in order to impress girls who were with him.

Police say he beat Baker to death.

It's a little hard to imagine that they would come upon an 81-year-old man and decide to do something like that," said the victim's son, Gregg Baker.

Baker said his father had had a wonderful night, telling his granddaughter, Leslie, how happy he was for her and her new husband.

"He said, 'If I were to die tonight, I'd die a happy man,'" Baker's son said.

But that celebration turned to mourning.

The groom learned Baker had died just before leaving the wedding and he and Leslie went to the hospital.

"Obviously, she was very distraught, upset, it's the hardest, I think, I've ever seen her cry," Gregg Baker said of his daughter.

Police officials are not releasing the names of the suspects.

The two 16-year-olds and 13-year-old have been charged with murder. Authorities say the older teens will be tried as adults.

The investigation is ongoing.

Prison? You hope they rot in prison? They don't deserve to live, even in prison. It's a waste of taxpayer dollars. They need to be executed.

Hanging is too humane. Public crucification is more the order of the day for that creep! He wants to act like a Roman soldier on the pillage and kill then let him pay the appropriate consequences.

Apparently the NAACP feels too many black juvenilles are being treated as adults. WTF ???

They were caught red handed murdering a defenseless senior citizen in cold blood , I mean seriously...this isnt joyriding or grabbing a 12 pack and running out the door at 7-11.

Trial should be as adults, if found guilty ...the punishment should match.

The NAACP should be embarrassed for making those comments in regards to this case.

" Kenneth Davis and Vernon Jackson, both 16, and an unidentified 13-year-old were arrested Tuesday and charged with murder in the slaying of 81-year-old George Leroy Baker.

W.E. Clark III, chairman of the legal redress committee of the Lynchburg branch of the NAACP, said in an interview on Thursday that he disagrees fundamentally with treating children as adults in state courts. Clark said an academic analysis of crime statistics shouldn’t be substituted for real-world experience working with children.

He said he also objects to the practice for racial reasons. He said he believes a disproportionate majority of juveniles turned over to adult courts are African American.

“The environment for most African Americans has a number of forces in it that are causing some of this problem,” he said. “We are not in favor of doing wrong or committing crime. We’re against it. But we have great problems in Lynchburg and in other places.”

State's sell big game licenses and special draws that can cost many thousands of dollars. Grizzly tags are expensive.

Why not sell tags for condemned murderers? The problem with firing squads are intentional misses; sell tags to motivated individuals and no more misses. Instead of the death process and final execution costing States thousands if not millions, make money.
15 shooters at 5000 dollars a tag, and no more misses.

    And broadcast it.

Not civilized enough? I agree with the poster who said bring back public hangings. How is it 'civilized' that people after committing the worst of crimes get to sit around at tax payer expense until the appeals process winds down?

If we're executing people we should be able to see it. If we're ashamed of it, why are we doing it? Get it out of the dark and into the public spotlight.

There are a lot of volunteers who would gladly end some of these human vampire's lives.
Maybe public humiliation is more important than we thought. We are so considerate of the violent criminal, and so blind to the victim. This young couple has a marr on the most precious of days, their lives are changed forever.

One question I haven't seen asked, these punks were doing this to impress girls. What kind of girls would be impressed by beating to death an 81 year old man? Maybe the girls should be charged as accessory to murder. Why weren't they stopping it or yelling for help?

    wow...really?

what girl is going to want to see a 13yr old beat up a 81 yr old man and think its "cool" "hot" or "awesome"?

These kids knew what they were doing, it was premeditated seeing they knew they were going to "beat someone up" and I'm sorry but someone that is 81yrs is not going to easily defend off 3 young boys that don't have a care what they do.

This is sick. Not only did they ruin the day for the granddaughter but also they runied her wedding anniversery because now every time they celebrate it will also bring this back to her, which is unfair to the family as well as her.

I hope these kids get whats coming to them. Any other idiots out there that try this crap I don't care how old you are should be tried as an adult. You want to be so grown up and be the "big man" and beat up someone, then take the time and live up to your "big man" status and get fried like the other A-holes that thought they "could get away with it"...

I've said for a long time now that we need to bring back public executions. Do it on their turf, in their hood, and let their peers see what happens to those that behave badly. Pay per view, and the proceeds go to the victims families.

I was kidding, only a little, about the big game licenses. But messiah's point is a great one; what about it? How about some public shaming?

What about bringing back the stocks? Put their head and hands in a wooden block and put them on display in a crowded local mall. To insure they aren't tortured I guess we'd have to put bullet proof glass around them. Too bad, local venders could place baskets of rotten fruit and vegitables so shoppers could heave some rot onto the criminals.

The crimnals convicted of lessor crimes would get out of the stocks and remember it for the rest of their lives. Local news could have a segment every night, the
'public stock wrap up' showing close up footage of their faces along with a list of current crimes and sentences.

The murderers would be executed after being placed on public display for say, 30 days.

"lynching' circumvented the legal process. We're talking trial by peers and full legal protection, only the execution and punishment phases of the law would have to be rewritten.

This need which some mistakenly call lynching is actually a justified response to a failed legal system that allows violent criminals to return to the streets and has protected the perpetrators more than the victims.
For executions we should increase the burdon of proof to eliminate innocent men being falsely imprisoned or killed.

How do public executions have anything to do with public shaming? The guy who's "shamed" in your scenario is seconds from death, do you really think his (or her, I suppose) ego is high on the list of concerns?

And honestly, if the death penalty already exists and hasn't already been a deterrent to these kind of degenerates, do you think the idea that their execution will be PUBLIC is enough for them to change their ways? Obviously they don't care. "Well, I was going to murder someone in cold blood... I was OK with being executed for it, but being executed in PUBLIC? No way! Where's the nearest Peace Corps recruitment center?"

    Not gonna happen.

the only reason they should rot in prison because even though they are being trialed as adults, they are 16. To shoot a 16 year old might be a bit much for the firing squad.

    Not gonna happen.

I agree with you on the first part about shaming verses executions.

The second part I completely disagree with you though. The problem with the death penalty we currently have is that #1: How many people are actually executed for commiting murder and/or rape??? Not very many compared to the numbers of these crimes that occur. #2: The length of time it takes the justice system to actually execute someone is such a long time that most people don't pay attention to the person being executed after being convicted. In some cases it's 20 years or more between conviction and execution.

That is why the people commiting the crimes don't care and it's not a deterrent for them.
