Mr. DEVOLVING (LOL!), okay, gotcha, so the driver still makes contact with the MDF, right? That being said, if I have it right, then using a sealer would be beneficial. -
That's correct Joe. I haven't even opened the two boxes of rings I got from Larry. I've just been too busy with work and Summer activities. That's my big Winter project is to spike, ring, Mortite, dynamat my SDA 1C's.
I trust Larry didn't forget anything when he shipped them to me, but perhaps I should check just to make sure. I know how hectic and confusing boxing and shipping this stuff can be sometimes.

I'm in the same boat here Brock but with different priorities. I didn't open mine either, thanks for bringing that up. I'll try to check it this afternoon. -

Yeah Larry suggested applying poly urethane to the upper side of the baffle before putting the mortite down. -
Just do the mortite/md. It certainly won't be any worse. Just make sure you flatten it a bit before starting to tighten the screws and when tightening just be careful and be sure to tighten evenly. I used it and it made a subtle but positive difference.
Plus if the designer of the speaker recommends it, it can't be all that bad. If you don;t like it, it can easily be removed and you can then try and source original gasket material.
Really, this is not worth losing sleep over or does it need a long gestation period. It's simple, easy, cheap and effective.
I found the bass was tighter using the stock gaskets with the rings.
Polk used it because they couldn't afford real gaskets.
It is not easy to remove.Political Correctness'.........defined

My thought is to have people try it if they want. In my experience there was a subtle improvement. To be fair my gaskets were pretty much shot, but I'm not going back because I like the improvement.
When you say "it's not easy to remove" are you speaking of the stuff Polk used in the early day which is now 25+ years old or the current stuff which you obviously only used for a very short time? I pulled a driver the other day and had no issue removing the MD caulk.
There is no right or wrong answer here. The improvements or detriments are very subtle at best. To anyone reading this thread you can go either path and it won't make much of a difference.
To those of us tweaker's it does make a small but noticeable difference that's why we persue these very mild tweaks.
Since the gaskets are no longer available from Polk (IIRC) what is everyone using for replacement material? And what is everyone using for a template to ensure proper fit, thickness and proper material that is exactly like the original?
Because if you are using different material and thickness than the original then you are altering it in the same way rope caulk is.

Brock I can speak for Jesse here as we discussed it in some length. When he installed the rings in his CRS+s he used Mortite. For whatever reason (it escapes me now) he had to remove one or more of the drivers and found that he had to use a knife found it a pain in **** to remove. He also didn't think it made a difference but found when he put the original gaskets back in, the bass was improved.
That's right from the horses mouth.:) -

Ok......I read (Jesse's post) and my results are different. Nothing more, nothing less . As far as from the horses mouth......I respect Jesse, but I do disagree, nothing more nothing less.

Gotcha bud!:) Mine are a mess. I have, that really **** PE foam on some MWs, originals gaskets in others and still more, PE speaker sealer caulk in some. When I install Larry's rings, I'm going to try to use the original gaskets if they are all good. If not, I'm going with PE speaker sealer caulk. -
With all this **** and unscrewing of drivers going on I just wanted to put in a word for the advice offered by heiney9. Pay attention to the tightening of the drivers on reinstallation. I bought a torque screwdriver a while ago just for this purpose, to make sure the drivers in both speakers are tightened down uniformly. Tighten them gradually, using several passes in the same pattern used for tightening lug nuts when replacing tires on your car.

Question on mortite with Larry's rings.
I noticed on on of the passive rings. The screw thing-a-ma-jigga's on the rings came though the holes and are slightly raised up of the level of the wood compared to the other.
(i guess the thickness of the wood is slightly different on one passive slot compared to the other)
is this a problem or will the mortite cover this.
we are talking maybe a gnat's a$$. -
You've got the rings, you don't need Mortite.Political Correctness'.........defined

Seems to me it would be a problem if the threads extend above the level of the wood but maybe I haven't caught the issue correctly. The driver should be coupled to the baffle uniformly. I'm not a real fan of metal/wood contact here so I'd apply a vibration-killer to both the ring and driver side.
