Replacing the VC of a Seas Milenium

Well - I had the gain on my pre a lil hot (my CDP gain was a little low) - just messing with settings and I guess more distortion was sent than I thought.

One tweeter went out

So I went ahead and ordered some replacement VC and replaced both coils to be on the safe side and thought I would take some pics of the process...

Hope you enjoy

    Wanna know something that sucks?

    It was the resistor.

    Ouch

    Sand cast? 5 watt?

Not a sand cast, its a mills type resistor - I dont know any specs on it as it is unmarked

Looks like the Eagle 10 w, 5% inductors Madisound sells...

Green? Probably a regular MOX type resistor.

Measure the good one out of your other speaker. You may have to remove it from the board to get an accurate reading.

If it's a 10watter, that's pretty impressive that you cooked it. :D Just curious, was it covered in hot glue or stuffing?

There is polyfill throughout the speaker...

Other than that - the bottom was neatly glued to the board, otherwise out in the open.

I asked Ty to send me the value so I can order the correct one.

    It is definitely a 10 watter - https://www.madisound.com/store/product_info.php?products_id=214

But yeah - I am pretty sure I hurt the tweeters as well - so it is probably a good thing I replaced the coils...

I had it loud - but no louder than normal, but the tubes were very overdriven

If you're looking for an upgrade: http://www.partsconnexion.com/resistors_duelund.html

Just watch the wattage, some are only 5w.

What would those resistors get me?

To my surprise Ty used cheap Madisound inductors and nice film and foil inductors in the network. Since I have the values written on them - I am ordering Erse inductors to replace the air cores....

The woofer network has cheap bennic capacitors - so I am replacing them with the PX series from Clarity Cap and replacing all resistors with the aforementioned resistors...

    So Yep! Fun fun!

I would like to note half the inductors were already film and foil - the other half were basic wirewound

After some more research I asked madisound to change the caps tp SA series

Slow down fella, I wouldn't change the inductors. If you swap out an inductor for one with higher or lower DCR, you could cause more harm than good.

As for caps, which are in what circuit. PM me if you don't want to give out his schematic.

The inductors in the speaker are labeled .22 and .35 via madisound --- is it not possible to not just swap them out with same value inductors? Now I am confused...

All caps posted are in the woofer network.

The Tweeter network has a 8 uf Hovland Musicap capacitor that is adequate I would say

So do I need to match the DCR or both or?

I would really like to upgrade those inductors...

    The .22 has a DCR of .18
    The .35 has a DCR of .3

So I see the inductors I chose have a very differen DCR.

I can get matching DCR values but the mh rating will be different...

Both. IMO, as long as the coils aren't saturating, caps and resistors have much more of an impact.

If they are air cores there would be no need to replace them.

New resistors and caps for the woofer section arrive tomorrow! woo hooo!

Parts Connexion charges an arm and a leg for shipping. 20 bucks for a pound of product? Jeeeez

I think in the next month or two I am going to upgrade the tweeter cap to the Clarity MR series... Just cant afford to do it at the same time as the rest.

    Incredible... absolutely incredible.

I dont know if it is those SA capacitors or those resistors - but wow.

The speaker sounds so much better. I know I am not crazy because my non audiophile friend immediately said what did you change... the left side sounds huge...

Incredible difference in those resistors I think - just wow

They're the real deal. I wish their price didn't double over the last couple of years.

Ordering anything else or are you happy for now? :D

Heres some pics of the new xovers

Wiring point to point is alot harder than circuit board I found... especially when you got 4 or 5 fat wires soldering to one place - i tried my best to keep it clean lol

But let me know what ya think - I tried to lay it out as neatly as I could since I am soldering, gluing out of a 7" hole lol

The woofer network solder joint could be better. If you can't twist the leads together, you can use wire clips or zip ties to hold the wires together.

hmm alright - I will see what I can do, I still have it cracked open...

I had to pack it all to the side because it has to clear the bottom woofer
