Some Wiring Questions

Just got a set of monitor 40's for my rear speakers! Now I need some new wire to set them up, I was thinking of getting 12 gauge and banana plugs. Is that a heavy enough gauge to run 25 feet? And would tinning the ends with the banana plugs be any good? Also, is Bi-wiring worth it?

Thanks,
JiB

JiB, welcome to Club Polk. The outstanding resource available to us on speaker wire in general, and gauge suggestions in particular, is this explanation of the facts by a veteran audio professional, which has helped countless newcomers over the past few years to avoid the wire scams which pollute our hobby. As you'll note, even 16ga would be fine for your use and there's no good reason to get a heavier, harder to handle wire. Tinning the ends isn't necessary.

As to bi-wiring(aka "buy-wiring"), no there's no significant electrical difference created by that and no audible improvement is available in reality.

JiB, that advice given to you by john k. is about as bad as it comes. You would do well to ignore it and that link he posted.

    Go with the 12 gauge.

I have to pay shipping on the banana plugs anyway, it will only be a few bucks more to add the speaker wire.

Here are some links to products:

    http://www.parts-express.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?Partnumber=091-330

The highest quality wire in the above links is listed last from Blue Jeans Cable. If you are interested in doing it once and can afford the cost the Canare 4s11 is really good cable. I currently have 45 foot runs to my rears using the Monoprice 12 gauge and it works pretty well. I am pushing a lot of watts though as these are the only speakers hooked to my AVR. I have this wire going to my surrounds also, but will be upgrading to the Canare 4s11 in the next couple of months.

There are a lot of bananas to choose from. The vampires I listed are solder/crimp connectors. The Daytons are two way clamping and are solidly made. Both of these are not pure copper, which is more expensive and higher quality.

There are several threads, one about two months ago with a lot of information and opinions on banana plugs. I bought some from monoprice and I didn't really like them. My opinion. Good luck to you and have fun with your new system.

You can buy banana plugs at radio shack or best buy.

Those locking binding posts are wonderful! You had me worried with those links, there are LOTS of knockoffs on the bay, but they come from 'Hong Kong', you can usually filter them out by searching for only North America.

I even hate ordering stuff from the US, they always want to charge duty and brokerage and extra taxes. I would never order anything from overseas, not worth the shipping.

As far as I can tell, shipping is subsidized in Hong Kong so it is very cheap to air mail things out. But fakes are rampant, and they are very good fakes.
