I would like to add a small 10" sub to my vintage 2 channel audio setup.
I'm sure this has been discussed several times, but I hope I can get some ideas from this post.

My current set up is very basic, a Pioneer SX-650 receiver, Technics SL-23 beltdrive TT, a Sony CD player and my Polks.

I love the little Polks with the SX-650; very good sound. But, can it be improved with a sub?

thanks

Mark

subs produce bass and independently at that if you wish. i have mon5's and a 10" and i think it sounds great but i like a bit more bass.

1 thing to keep in mind is that bass can overshadow other sounds so it does change what you hear in other frequency ranges too.

What type/brand of SW do you have?

i dunno. sound dynamics i think. with subs i don't think it really matters that much. all it does is amplify a very narrow frequency band. boom, boom, boom...thats all they do. get what you can afford. if you turn it up too much you overpower a small speaker like mon 5's anyway.

    I have a JBL PW10 -- it's a nice little 10 sub with selectable frequency x-over and volume...

100 wats and has lfe and normal stereo inputs and outputs if you want to run your left and right channel through it....

it's downward firing -- no problems does the job nicely

For the money, the PSW505 (polk) is amazingly small and useful. It is priced right along side the psw110 at the moment, and is a monster at the bottom end of the frequency range. Sure, it is no sonosub, but it blends nicely with the 5's with a little tuning and listening.

I always prefer to have too much sound that I can reign in over not enough sound.

That may be too big. This setup is going into a small bedroom/converted office/mancave. It be cranking too loud, unless my wife is yelling at me and I don't want to listen.

An mirage prestige s8 would be nice as well. Very small, musical, and goes plenty low for a 2 channel rig. Look at Vanns and ebay.

Yea, I have my 505 powered way down too, because it can get oppressive at even medium volume. I listened to them side by side, and decided that the 505 handles the bottom end more effortlessly, and thus would be easier to balance with the rest of my system. Depending on the size of your room, it might be overkill, because it does push a lot of air. For me, the dimensions and price were so close that I pulled the trigger on the 505.

    PSW505 - ~$250
    16-1/8" H x 15-1/8" W x 18-3/16" D

    PSW110 - ~$250
    14-1/2" H x 14-1/4" W x 17" D

That one may be overkill also. Would be great for the HT though.
$99 for the PSW10 from Amazon - in a small bedroom - may be the thing.
I'm just looking to add a little more low end.

I'm wondering if I should even do this.

    Thanks though!

My room is probably 11x12 tops, with a laminate wood floor. I assume the PSW10 ($99 thru Amazon) will work with a two channel audio receiver.

    Looks like it will anyway.

Zuul, are you set up in a small room? Using an older two channel receiver?

Tiny mancave, but at least you have one! Yea, the PSW10 would probably be your best bet for that room size.

Yea, tiny but I couldn't talk the wife out of one of the bigger bedrooms (we simply have to have a larger room for company).

I think I've convinced myself that the PSW10 is the best bet.

Welcome to Club Polk. I have a PSW10 in my kitchen eating area and in a small bedroom two channel system.
They work fine for that and are fine at that price.

    Thanks for your help.
Would love to see pics of all your equipment.
Do the LSi9's perform the way you expected? Primarily music or video?
Would an 85W receiver (recently recapped) be a decent match for them?

    thanks

To all who posted based on the info I supplied.
Those speakers are Monitor 5's NOT 5jrs.

I don't know where the hell I got that, unless I'm just getting older and more prone to brain farts.

    Well, that changes EVERYTHING!

    ;)

Kidding, kidding... 85w is plenty for the small monitors, which are not as power hungry as their SDA cousins.

    I kill myself sometimes.

I currently have them hooked up to my SX-650. The 850 is downstairs in the living room hooked up to HPM-60's. I had the 850 recapped, and the output went from 65 to 85w continous.
I would love to do the same to the 650.
