Hello all,

I'm looking at upgrading my sub. I'm currently running a PSW10 that I got for free when I bought my Onkyo AVR, its ok, but lots of port noise, and it really doesnt hit as much as I'd like on surround movies. So, I'm looking to upgrade. It seems I can get the 505 or 605 for a good price used. What would you guys recomend? I havent heard either of these subs, but want to make sure that I buy either that I'll be happy for awhile. I'll be using it with my SDA-CRS's, listen to a lot of music through 2 channel (blues, bluegrass, older rock, etc...) and just want to make a good decision. I like idea of the 605 but really want to know if the dual 10's are worth the extra cash, thanks!

You won't hear anything bad said about the 505 on this forum. I have one and love it, I'm sure others will post similar.

Don't know much about the 605...

I believe you mean PSW650. I do have a PSW505 and have no complaints. Great sub for even a large room.

If you are talking about the PSW650, I'd give it a resounding "meh." Don't get me wrong, it is not awful, but it is not very good either. Technically, the two 10" woofers should have more surface area than a 12", but there is more to the story than that.

The drivers on the PSW650 do not have a lot of excursion and bottom out quite easily. Looking at pictures of the PSW505, the driver has a much, much larger foam surround. As such, it would seem that the driver the PSW505 uses has much, much more excursion than the PSW650 could ever hope for. In addition, the amplifier in the PSW505 has nearly double the RMS output of the PSW650.

I've relegated my PSW650 to my karaoke system. It works good for this, but it is quite heavy and a pain to transport.

In conclusion, I think the PSW650 is fine for a music-only system, but I don't think it cuts it for home theater. Since you mentioned movies, I would suggest going with the PSW505. That one would definitely be better for movies, and should be good for music as well.

I like my 505, I had a Velodyne F1200 back some years ago. I think the 505 does just as good of a job. My debate now is do I buy a second 505 or upgrade to a higher end sub? I have seen some PSW1000 used too, those are two 12's over the two 10's of the 650.

Does anyone have any thoughts on buying a second 505 for myself or waiting and upgrading to a higher end sub down the road?

I'd upgrade instead of buying a second one.

I was about to pull the trigger on a second 505 this weekend, now i'm second guessing. If I sold mine and put the same money i would have spent on the second sub with it, i'd still have under a $500 budget. Are there really any subs out there than would sound better than 2 505's for under $500?

Good point. I doubt there is anything out there under $500 that would beat two 505's. When I said upgrade I meant spending $800-$1200 on a sub.

I just wouldn't want to be stuck on two 505's a year from now. When I could forego the second sub purchase now and buy an upgrade 6 months from now.

I have a 303 that I intended to use in my bedroom I can get rid of. so i can either off the two and upgrade or off the 303 and buy a second 505.

Yeah that's a different story. I think for now i'm going to go with a second one since it's just for movies anyways and i like the way one sounds. For 800-1200 that opens up a lot more options. But for $250 shipped its hard to beat :D

Save your nickles boys and jump to one of these 2 for near reference bass...

TCAs 18.1 $775.00 fugly, but with a highly efficent driver that goes very deep, possibly 10hz in some rooms without sacrificing midbass.

Epik Empire $800 I've heard this guy. It's got near Ultra13 output, hit's extremely hard, solid 20hz or more in room performance, very tight.

Either should get you more value per $ than any budget or 12" ID sub.

    Combo rig:

Onkyo NR1007 pre-pro, Carver TFM 45(fronts), Carver TFM 35 (surrounds)
    SDA 1C, CS400i, SDA 2B
    PB13Ultra RO
    BW Silvers
    Oppo BDP-83SE
