Yamaha V665 vs Onkyo TX-SR608

Hi,

I'm planning to get a pair of Polk M-70s and possibly either a center speaker or a sub to go with them. I was wondering what receiver would be good for this kind of setup? I've read some of the other threads and saw the SR608 as a recommendation since it has a good amount of power per channel and also preouts but looking at the V665 it looks about the same aside from some of the newer HDMI things.

Any help is appreciated, sorry I'm new to this :(

i like my 665, but if you can go a little higher i would go with the new 667 if you want to yamaha.. its got the latest codecs and the 667 amps are a lot better than the 665.. better power supply.. and better amplification design.

onkyo 608 does not have pre outs.

but... it's a very nice receiver packed with features! I really like mine, I just WISH it had pre-outs...

What about the Yamaha RX-V765? I noticed this seems to be on the same level as the 608 on power wise and has plenty of pre-outs.

Also how exactly do you connect an amp using the pre-outs?

Sorry new to all this >_<

You simply connect the L/R channels labeled on the pre-out section on the receiver to the L and R inputs on a power amplifier with a stereo RCA cable. Then connect the speakers to the amplifier's binding posts.

You shouldn't have to do anything else on the receiver (ie..no fiddling w/ any options). You may want to rerun YPAO or Audyssey after if you use those..but that's about it.

I use the 665 as a pre-pro, and it works well. I don't find it bright at all. I think the 665's biggest flaw is the amplifier section (which I no longer use), It's mediocre at best.

    +1 for the Onkyo 805 - but I'm a biased, very happy owner... :o

Seriously, it would take one helluva deal on one helluva piece of gear to make me upgrade the 805. I might run an external power amp off the 805 one day, but honestly don't know if it's really needed...

FWIW, we have a Yamaha 863 for our secondary system and have been very happy with it. It powers RTi28s, CSi30 and PSW303.
