How do you organize your CD Collection?

I have no disciplined methodology and was wondering how everyone else racks them up? I currently organize them alphabetically by media type. I have all my SACDs, Mofi CDs, and DVD-audios on one side of my CD rack and the non-hi res stuff on the other side. I allow the SACDs and MoFi CDs to mix but the DVD-A stuff is kept separate. I also have a sub-section in my hi-res section for just classical music be it high res or not. In the past I've divided things up by genre such as Rock, Jazz, Classic etc. but found that I prefer organizing them by media type. Now I am thinking that I want a section containing only the highest quality recordings regardless of media type. I also seem to keep a buffer area where CDs are stacked with no rhyme or reason while they are either waiting to be played or returned to the rack. So what's your method?

I have all my Rock/Pop CDs (which is 85% of my collection) organized alpha by artist and then alpha by title. I then have separate sections for Various Artists, Soundtracks & Stage productions, DJ Services, Tribute CDs, and finally Jazz & Blues. Each one of the sections are alpha by artist and then title./COLOR] My Rigs [COLOR="Red" Balanced Audio Technology | Revel | Dodd | Monarchy | PS Audio | MIT | Polk | Etc.

Alphabetical order by band on my hard drive."He who fights with monsters should look to it that he himself does not become a monster. And when you gaze long into an abyss the abyss also gazes into you." Friedrich Nietzsche

Consecutive order as acquired....yup just place a number on the case and disc. Then enter any data desired on a computer spreadsheet and sort at will, then look for the disc number.
Better yet is to rip discs to a Hard Drive (flac lossless preferred) and serve via database and remote control. I prefer the Logitech Squeezebox system, which even puts album art in the palm of your hand.SDA SRS 1.2

I have a rack by my rig that I place all my newest and/or favorite cd's. No order.
Then I have a larger area that I keep all the rest, again no particular order.
Somehow, I'm always able to find what I want quickly. -

LOL! I have the same problem but I don't give up!
On the very top of the CD stand I have all my box sets regardless of quality.
On the first and second shelves of my CD stand I have all hi-rez and audiophile redbooks as well as redbooks that I feel are outstanding pressings.
From that point on down, I have them listed in alphabetical order first by artist then by album title.
Now concerning vinyl, I have an organized mess!:D -
Genre -> Artist (Alphabetized) -> Release date for the majority of the collection. For the high res stuff that sits on another shelf and is alpha sorted by artist.

Holy smokes Scott! Hey if you're ever in my area I have a job for you with my vinyl collection.;) -
I use an MS Access database I created, but the CD's and DVD/BluRays are simply on the rack by Title. I can sort them however I like in the database; by genre, band, category, etc.Source: Bluesound Node 2i - Preamp/DAC: Benchmark DAC2 DX - Amp: Parasound Halo A21 - Speakers: MartinLogan Motion 60XTi - Shop Rig: Yamaha A-S501 Integrated - Shop Spkrs: Elac Debut 2.0 B5.2

It's a deal if I'm ever in DE. The only prerequisites would be a comfortable chair and table, and for you to spin some of your favorite tunes.
I know it sounds weird, but I always enjoyed looking at the album art and reading all the details including producer, studio location, release date etc...
To this day I even sit down and read the liner notes of my Cd's. I guess it's just part of the ritual I follow when listening to an album for the first time.Without music to decorate it, time is just a bunch of boring production deadlines or dates by which bills must be paid. ..... Frank Zappa -

I almost never buy CDs anymore and what I do buy I load into iTunes and then pack the CD away in a box and into the loft in the garage.If...

Ron loves a film = don't even rent. -

You got a deal pal. Plus I'll have some of my wife's famous roast pork sandwiches available and my famous melange of roasted peppers in olive oil heavily spiked with garlic and herbs with some good old fashion sharp provolone that will make your gums burn all piled high on one of the best Italian rolls from South Philly you could ever sink your teeth into. It is like Lay's potato chips . . . I defy you to eat just one! Hehehe.
One warning though, after you eat you'll notice for about a week after when you are speaking to someone they turn green under the gills from the garlic emanating from your pours and breath! LOL!!! -

+1 on using access to make a database that can cross reference. I went to the dollar store and purchased dvd folders and number stickers. I numbered the folders and created a database that cross references number to titles."They're always talking about my drinking, but never mention my thirst" Oscar Wilde

Usually in this type of order: Artists in alpha order. Release date by artist.

That's how I do it, then I have a separate rack for Alice In Chains, Black Sabbath, Blue Oyster Cult, Pink Floyd and UFO because I have all of their CDs and they take up a lot of room. -
Genre -> Artist (Alphabetized) -> Release date for the majority of the collection.
I use the same method as Gadabout except I have a tiny table top rack I keep latest and favorites.
I also have a small tray that holds ones my wife uses. Just cause I am a control freak. -
I recently added a "Reference" column to my music dBase, so I can annotate especially well recorded stuff for future reference. It's a 4-star system based on the quality of the recording, not the content:
* poor (beer coaster)
** fair (listenable, but lacking. Dry/flat, 2-dimensional)
*** good (relatively good recording, your average CD. Nothing glaringly bad, but has minor flaws)
**** reference (top-notch. Excellent imaging/soundstage, analog sounding, even keel freq extremes)Source: Bluesound Node 2i - Preamp/DAC: Benchmark DAC2 DX - Amp: Parasound Halo A21 - Speakers: MartinLogan Motion 60XTi - Shop Rig: Yamaha A-S501 Integrated - Shop Spkrs: Elac Debut 2.0 B5.2
