Looking for a receiver

Hey everybody I have been reading these threads for months looking for people in the same boat, then it hit me...why not just ask y'all.

So I am getting the Rti a7's, Csi a6, and the PSW125. I need a receiver...

I have been looking at the Pioneer VSX-1020-k and the VSX-1120-k, will these receivers be able to handle the power of the speakers I want?

I see alot of people talking about Onkyo so I saw the TX-SR608 and TX-SR707.

Are these receivers good enough? and if so what why should I pick Onkyo over Pioneer?

Thanks for the help.

Here's a question - do you plan to listen to music only in 2 channel mode with the subwoofer? Or without?
ALL BOXED UP for a while until I save up for a new place :(

I'm sorry I am really new to this... i didn't even think to listen to music without the sub. I was thinking I would use the sub to listen to music.

Nah, it's all good - I went through the exact same thing (well I'm still going through it). The feeling I get around here is that the RTi A7s sound better with dedicated power (ie. a 200+ watt/ch power amp). I'm actually going to validate that for myself in a few days.

The A7s are a full range speaker (they'll go down to 35hz) and I actually got them so I wouldn't need to turn the sub on when listening to music. I still do use the sub sometimes (I set the crossover on the sub to 40hz). It's just something to be aware of. Another thing I noticed is that when watching movies where all speakers are driven, the A7s get a little quieter (as the receiver is putting out less power when all speakers are driven).

Anyway, if you get a receiver with pre-outs (aka the Pioneer 1120 and Onkyo 707 both have them), you can add an amp later if you like.

As for receivers, I know alot of people like Pioneer on here so it's probably a safe bet. My dad has the Onkyo 707 and it's definitely warmer sounding than the Yamaha 663 it replaced (A7s are a little bright w/ the Yamaha).

I have a Denon and the A7s sound much more balanced with it - I have yet to touch the tone controls (which I was always doing w/ the Yamaha)

Between the two that you listed, I would definately get the 1120. It'll be worth it in the long run. The RTiA7's are pretty power hungry and you're going to want an external amp before long. The Onk 608 is a no go, but the 707 would be a good option. I like the 07 series Onkyo's better than the non-elite Pioneer's, but that's all a matter of opinion. Just make sure you get preouts on your first AVR or it'll be out the door before you know it. Ask 'mole . .

Yes, your speakers will definitely perform better with seperates! Doing a little research on here and buying used seperates somewhere, instead of new receiver, will yield muuuuuch better results!

But, if you can't do that right now, then go and listen to some receivers. Do you have a Best Buy around you? I was fooling around in there the other day and noticed the Onkyo sounded quite a bit better than some of the other recievers...and I wasn't even paying attention to the recievers, I was listening to some of the speakers (I know I know, but it was only for fun). I actually thought wow, that was a difference, when the salesman was switching receivers.

    Good Luck!
