24 fps Question

I need some one to explain in simple terms (for a simple mind) the impact of a TV that is 24fps capabable vs. one that is not. I understand that BD's are 24fps, but what happens to that signal when fed into the two different types of TV's?

If a TV has 120hz, 240hz or 600hz refresh, what happens to the 24fps from the BD player with the two different TV scenarios?

I'm currently looking at Panansonics 65" plasma, models TCP65S2 and TCP65V10. One has the 24fps capabiltiy, the other doesn't. So I'm trying to determine if its worth an extra $300 for the capability in the V10 model.

Any help will be appreciated !!! Thanks

It's actually pretty simple man. Most movies are shot at 24 frames per second. Now here's the thing. Most, if not all new tv's can playback 24p content. The problem is that are standard refresh rates here in America are multiples of 60 (NTSC standard), ie 60, 120, 240 etc. Therefore 24 doesn't go evenly into 60, or multiples thereof. So tv's use what they call "pulldown" to make it work, and it works pretty well, but everyone now and then will complain of "judder", and some movies are worse than others. Now some tv's offer full 24p compatibility which means that they actually play at 24fps without any adjustment necessary, so there will be no "judder".

Bottom line? If you watch a lot of movies with 24p content, and you have the extra 300 bucks, just do it. If not you'll be kicking yourself every time you see the dreaded "judder".

I compared those 2 screens for months, and ended up with the V10. IMHO, the 24fps, along with the THX cert and extra fine tuning capabilities made the V10 worth the extra $$. If you get an ISF calibration after your break in, I think you will be very impressed.

So on a TV without 24 fps capability, the 2:3 pulldown converts to the multiple of 60. This may be a dumb question, but is this the same as refresh ratio such as 120, 240, 600hz or is that being applied differently?

A TV with 24 fps capability and up to 600hz refresh will still run at 24 fps or something faster?

The movie will play at 24p, like it is supposed to. 600hz is the screens refresh rate, so during fast action sequences and sports there is no motion blur.

RCFGuitars - where did you purchase your V10? The only place I've seen it for sale is on line. I also heard that its potentially discontinued? If true, anyone know why?

It was part of the 2009 line of Panasonic's plasmas. There just aren't that many options when it comes to 65 inch tv's. Panny's new 65" 3d tv looks f'n awesome, but is pricey.

Oh, and if you do go with the s2, I'd recommend Abe's of Maine. Free shipping, free wall mount, and no sales tax.

The 2009 line of plasma had some issues with loss of deep blacks over time as well. I think that's why they redid their entire line for 2010, to address that issue.

Some of the Pioneer plasmas have a Film Mode when set to Advance can detect a 1080p/24 source and convert it to a 1080p/72 source for a more film like experience.

I finally decided to buy when I found out they were discontinued, and the local stores where sold out. I got mine through Amazon. Free shipping, no tax. I had it ISF calibrated, and it looks great. It replaced a 1080i Sony Wega XBR CRT that had a great picture, but was only half the size (and 2x the weight). BTW- no issues with loss of black levels.

I read that too, before making my decision. But, in my home, this screen gets about 10hrs / month of use, so it will be years before I hit 1000 hours, and by then, I'll have something new.
