now that im slowly creeping into a better setup, would i be able to tell a difference between a very nice older denon cd and a sacd.
because of limited income, the cost of used player would be a factor, the cost of individual cds a little less so, because we will probably just buy a relatively few of our albums over time.
anyone with experience with both please let me know the cost benefit ratioin your opinion.
thanks

You will love SACD over any regular cd player almost...
It's a part of the audio world SONY just doesn't care about a whole lot but they do plan on making alot more discs it seems.
I only own one SACD but will buy alot more in the future I'm sure.
The players $ has come down alot so the only cost is paying a little more for the discs but BELIEVE me , it's worth everything extra they charge. Most people just listen to music and watch movies. I EXPERIENCE them. -
On my system, SACD was nice and all (2-channel only for me btw), but in all honestly my Classe redbook player sounds better on most regular CD's than my Denon 3910 SACD player did on most 2-channel SACD's. At one point I did try a few 5.1 SACD's and they were nice, but it just wasn't my thing.
As with any format, there are some very good sounding SACD's and some not-so-good sounding SACD. And there's also some great sounding redbook CD's, and some not-go-good sounding ones. So from my point of view, SACD is fine and all, but it's not the best thing since sliced bread or anything.Speakers: Polk LSi15

two experiences, different opinions. might have to try scouring cl for a deal on a player. although probably not as ubiquitous as av receivers speakers and such.
go the bargain route to see if its my thing.humpty dumpty was pushed -

I got into SACD's late - didn't buy any until December of 2009. I am now up to 137 of them because I found I really liked some of them. Bargain route worked fine for me. That allowed me to experience some I would not have tried otherwise. However, having said that, the order in which I like the SACD is usually 1) the piece itself, 2) the performer or composer and lastly whether it is SACD or not. I do find that I like some of the Multi Channel ones a lot and they are a definite plus for some recordings. About half of my SACD's are classical, one fourth are jazz and the rest are popular/rock. Unfortunately, a lot of good ones, especially the popular/rock, are out of print. My average for the classical ones is about $9 each and for the rest about $7.50 each. I buy only SACD's now.Front - Polk LSiM 705, Center - Polk LSiM 704c, Rear - Polk LSi 7

true dat. well, the disc in the tray not included.
for a budget rig a Denon 2900/3910 and a MF tube buffer produced a rather pleasing sound for me.
Edit....for SACD I am saying for....redbook, do the mod as not so hot.

My Ultech UCD-100 CD player plays CDs the best. then the Denon (I think) 2800 DVD CD player second.
My Pioneer SACD CD DVD player does pretty well w/cds and dvds but it seems neutral but accurate at the same time. The one Carpenters SACD I own sounds like the people are really in my room. A friend of mine who is a drummer thought he could tell the type of sticks he was hearing in the recording as they or one hit the rim of the drum.
I didn't know there were some bad SACDs. I'll check online and search well before I pay for future ones.ThanksMost people just listen to music and watch movies. I EXPERIENCE them.
