Now that we know the Gulf is teeming with oil eating bacteria we do not have to worry about this anymore. Of course, once these bacteria run out of oil they might mutate into people eating bacteria.

On a serious note. What ever happened to the other oil rig. The last I heard the relief well was a few days away from being completed, and then nothing. It dropped off the news.

...the good and the bad of these events are:

    - new regulations will be put in place.
    - insurance rates for oil drilling will go up
    - the consumer will pay the price

    .....go green.

I see no good news there at all.

Have we forgotten that Mt. ST. Helens did more environmental damage in 30 seconds than all of mankind has ever done... COMBINED!?!

I am all for taking care of the planet, but going "green" will do nothing but bankrupt us all.

Actually, most are self insured. Remember the 75 million dollar cap that was agreed to after the spill in Alaska ? That allowed the oil companies to pretty much self insure themselves knowing the most they would have to pay is the 75 mill. You would think, instead of trying to pass a whole slew of new regulations, they just lift the cap. Then you have insurance companies involved who would then be placing more stringent guidelines on the oil companies to become insured. Something seems fishy down there. We go for decades without a hiccup, and suddenly 2 explosions within 4 months ?

YEEEESSSSSS!!!!!!! Thank god! For a sec, with all the news about global warming being a sham, I was afraid Indiana lost all hope of being the next Hawaii in my lifetime. I'm crossing my fingers. It could still happen!

Yeah... umm good luck with that one. When we bought our house, I was assured that my home would have at least 175 feet of pristine Bread Basket Oceanfront in another half a billion years.:p:D Indianapolis will be a mile below sea level by then.;)

Do you think they will still be making replacement drivers and tweeters for my SDA's then, or should I start stocking up now?

So, how did dead dinosaur bones and forests get to be 8000 ft under the surface of the sea a hundred miles or more from our current coast? And how do empty oil wells fill back up with oil over time? I'm not so sure the legacy theories of how crude oil occurs are all that accurate.

That being said the pursuit of alternative energy sources needs to be focused on and invested in.

...all I can tell you is what science has to offer.

    Mineral oil

Mineral oils, found in porous rocks underground, originated from organic material, such as dead plankton, accumulated on the seafloor in geologically ancient times. Through various geochemical processes this material was converted to mineral oil, or petroleum, and such. These are classified as mineral oils because they do not have an organic origin on human timescales, and are instead derived from underground geologic locations, ranging from rocks, to underground traps, to sands.

Other oily substances can also be found in the environment; the most well-known of those is asphalt, occurring naturally underground or, where there are leaks, in tar pits.

......But ...just think all our bodies that are buried with all the vegetation "May" become fuel for future generations.

Petroleum and other mineral oils (specifically labelled as petrochemicals) have become such a crucial resource to human civilization in modern times they are often referred to by the ubiquitous term of "oil" itself.

The only thing I can promise you about oil is that it is carbon based, therefore, an organic molecule. Let the speculation begin!

    .

Whew....lets give praise then to the likes of Hitler,Stalin and Mao,for supplying us with future oil reserves.

The process of organic matter turning into oil takes a very long time. Longer than our society will ever see, so who cares where it comes/came from. Bottom line is we use natural resources,we don't create them. We need Tony Stark to come up with a new source of energy. Worked in Iron Man anyway.:p
