spreadsheet sharing online

Ok, so I'm trying to share a budget spreadsheet I created for myself online in google docs, so I can access this bad boy at home or at work, and will be able to keep track of all of expenses in real time.
So I'm able to upload the spreadsheet (and convert it to a google doc), but when I open it, the formatting is atrocious. All cell shadings are black, and I'm going to have to put some leg work into cleaning this up.
Wasn't sure if anyone had more experience than I in dealing with google doc formatting from excel files, and if I was missing a very basic/easy conversion function....
