Well I was accused of..... attempted rape by someone who had asked for a pair of rare JBL drivers when I told him I wanted what the last pair sold for on Ebay he said I should sell them to him for at least 30% less than what that was because he was a member of this particular forum, had joined earlier this month and should get a special deal because of that.

I told him that most of the rare vintage JBL/Altec drivers are continuing to rise in price and very likely in 5 years or less they will be double what they are now and if I sold them for less than I would be a fool. Its not like I want to sell them, I thought I was doing him a favor by offering to sell them at all.

Oh well cant please everyone I guess :)

REGARDS SNOW
Well, I just pulled off the impossible by doing a double-blind comparison all by myself, purely by virtue of the fact that I completely and stupidly forgot what I did last. I guess that getting old does have its advantages after all :D

Do you know a pair of JBL sold for 33K+? You can sell the driver you have for 30% less than the price sold. Just show him the link here.

    http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=130420422741

Oh yeah, the price of that vintage JBL will only GO UP and UP like balloning or balony.

Now, it makes me think being a Polkie must be SPECIAL. I want a Polkie badge made in pure copper just to make sure it will double duty as improving my system rig when put on my LSi speakers.

Can anyone here make me a Polkie badge on a CNC machine and professionally anodized? Cost is no problem here. :D

Some of the stuff is insanely priced in my oppinion but it continues to go up. I have a small collection of old JBL drivers horns etc some of them are extremely rare and perhaps someday when I get old enough to retire they will supplement my retirement. I just found it humorous that someone asks you for something that you dont want to part with and then they call you a rapist when you ask for the current value. Ive been called many things over the years but this is the first time for that :p

Umm, yeah... your 604 Duplexes, your 515 and 416 woofers, your 806, 288 compression drivers, your 811B, 511B, 1505 horns... stuff like that.

Agreed. Altec made some very nice sounding drivers and so did JBL IMHO, of course like anything else people will always have favorite brands and models. There will always be the Pioneer versus Sansui versus Marantz versus Kenwood comparsions and I think that each company had some winners and some not :)

Most of the JBL compression drivers dont bother me but those 035 titanium tweeters are awful IMHO shrill sounding as all get out.

I've walked away on many offers, only to be called back...and others that happened the same way as you Snow. My areas so thick with audio that I don't even think twice anymore. Russman taught me almost every buying trick I know and they continue to work to this day.

You're right, you can't satisfy everyone and some folks think what they have is worth a million dollars, some think that since they had so many phone calls...their price was now too low, blah blah. The only thing I do with Altec and JBL drivers? Sell them.

    Good job!
CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers? Always changing but for now, Mission Argonauts I picked up for $50 bucks, mint.

Well you can look at it like that both as the seller and buyer. On most items I sell here or at other forums they are priced at a discount off retail Ebay-audiogon prices but there are some items that for various reasons I dont want to sell at a discount or sell at all and if someone wants to purchase them they will have to pay the price that I want, some items I sell go directly to Ebay or Audiogon because of this and I dont want to upset anyone.

Sometimes people feel a sense of entitlement and that because they know you as a friend or because you belong to the same public forum that not only do they deserve it but you owe them a special discount.

I have had people tell me well I know you only paid x amount so you should sell this item/s to me for the same price, for example lets say I find a shoebox full of Mickey Mantle rookie cards in mint condition at a yard sale for $2.00 should I be required to sell them for $2.00 to you? knowing full well that if I do 9 times out of 10 that my buddy that bought them is going to re sell them at full retail and laugh all the way to the bank. Now who is getting raped?

These particular drivers are not going down in value and even if I sold them at full retail today in a few years they will be worth twice that amount so in reality I am actually doing this person a favor by selling them at all.

As a buyer I like to get what I consider a good deal on something sure and usally if it isnt a good deal I will pass but I dont expect anyone to give me one and if its something I really want or need odds are I will pay the price.

Giving back to the community by selling something at a discount is something that is a kind thing to do but it shouldndt be something that you feel you are required to do and to feel like anyone owes you anything is IMHO wrong.

I don't fully understand how anyone could say something like that to you. I mean, you can set any price, any, and that is your business. "Thank you very much but no" is the correct response to a price one is unwilling to pay.

It's hard to figure someone stopping to toss out an insult. In the forum I've already seen some folks jumping to insults without much preamble. They don't seem to need to warm up first, or be provoked.

I'm starting to form a mental picture of the worst characteristics of at least some equipment collectors.
