Hey guys,

I got a all in one HT a few years back, it came with an onkyo ht-r550 receiver. Worked pretty well in college (small room), not I got a house w/ a pretty big living room. I just ordered some monitor 70's, a cs2, and a PSW505 12-Inch Powered Subwoofer. My initial plan is to use the front's that came with the HT as my surrounds.

My main question is whether the ht-r550 is good enough to drive all this. It's not top of the line, and it's got the old hdmi (pass through video AND audio to tv....so I use optical and coax cables for audio; pain in the butt, but it works so far). However, I looked us the specs and it's 100 watts per channel. However, I've heard you can't just go back that stat, but not sure how to tell if it's good enough. If it's not, I was lookin into the onkyo 770 (don't think I need hdmi 1.4). My tv is a 58" samsung plasma.

My second question would be, what are good ceiling speakers to match to the monitor 70 series? I have a great room floor plan, so it's open behind me and to my right, no walls to mount on (just ceiling) unless I put it 10-15 feet away. Would bookshelf speakers 10-15 ft away still be better than ceilings?

I have tile floors, if that makes a difference.

Thanks for your help, I appreciate it!!!

If that Onkyo has pre-outs then you could always get a dedicated amplifier to power your M70s. These two speakers will use the most power in your HT system.
    HT and Music Rig
    Receiver- NAD T765 HD
    Mains- Polk Audio Monitor 70
    Center- Polk Audio CS2
Surrounds side- Polk Audio Monitor 60
    Sub- Polk Audio PSW505

    Windows 7 Media Center
    T.V.- 40" Sony Bravia LCD 1080P
    Blu-Ray- 80 GB PS3

    WELCOME TO CLUB POLK!

Your Onkyo most definitely does not have pre-outs...too low a model. However it might be able to drive your speakers well enough for the moment. Most Onkyos---even the HTIB AVRs are high current amp designs so it would probably be adequate for the short term as you've proposed above.

As you know...your front stage L/C/R are the most important speakers to match.
You've got three nice speakers for that...and a pretty good sub....for surround set your speakers to SMALL and cut off at 80hz for the sub and let the sub handle the deep bass. That way even that low model Onkyo will be able to handle the speakers up front and your surrounds.
