that sizzle i have heard and it is distracting and ruinous of the illusion while listening. is it normally caused by speakers, electronics source material or any of above.

I also get this on just words ending with S. I have replaced speakers and amp, but still there.

It's usually the source componant thats the culprit, but could also be the recording sometimes too. I have heard of some amps with the trait, but very few.

Scotty, I don't know what any of those threads said, but sibilance is a normal and necessary part of human speech. It's a sort of "hiss" at the end of Ss and Ts especially. Good recordings played back on good speakers should reproduce this normal amount of sibilance, it's an excessive amount that gets to be annoying. This may be from the performer him/her self, from the recording, from the listening room or from the speakers. The exact range in which sibilance lives varies slightly, but typically is said to fall in the 4KHz-8KHz octave. The normal use of the treble tone control can help, but use of an equalizer in that frequency range is more precise.

Of course a more basic approach is to buy well-recorded performances which don't contain excessive sibilance and play them back on speakers which have a flat upper mid-range/lower treble, which is what I attempt to do.
