Thanks for the links guys. I'm a member over in the EL, and saw that listing already. Unfortunately, the guy won't budge on his price; and, with shipping, it's only $25 less than a brand new one. It's only a month old, so that make a little sense, but it's not enough of a deal for me to jump on it.

I like the Emo amps and believe their X-series pushes the Polks insanely well. Unlike many who criticize, I've heard this exact combo before, and it simply rocks. I can't wait to hear my M70's being pushed by the XPA5... I just can't afford full price right now. :(

So, unless you guys find a used 5-ch alternative, with just as much clean power, for less than $600 shipped, I don't want to read about how much you don't like Emotiva...

its not about the amount of watts the amp is putting out. there are other choices, however when you start saying you want less and less for a budget it gets tougher and tougher.

Amps to look at around a 500-800 mark.

Adcom 7500 (one on the gon is wayyyy over priced at 800)
    B&K http://www.audiogon.com/cgi-bin/cls.pl?ampsmult&1286957788&/B-K--multi-channel-amp--av5000
Sunfire, Rotel, Adcom, Parasound, B&K, Outlaw, ATI, NAD ect are all amps that you can look at and that if buying used will give you great bang for the buck. Not too long ago there was the Adcom 7500 up on the gon for a little over 400. Great deal and a great amp.....just look out.

also emo does have B stock. Call them. to warn you, a lot of the emo amps will still stay very close to their original prices on the used market. People don't really budge on them.

I'd say, don't buy an amp now if you're on a short budget.

Save the cash until you can afford something much better, that way once you upgrade your speakers you won't worry about needing an amp to properly push them. I say this because, you really don't need an amp for your 70's...so think of this amp as the foundation for your speaker upgrade.

    Just my .02 of course.

This reviewer seems extrememly impressed with emo stuff:
    http://forums.audioholics.com/forums/showthread.php?t=68204

I have no idea how independent and objective this source is, i say that because i simply don't know this person. Non the less, if those numbers are reliable, then it seems like the emo stuff holds it's own, especially at that price range.

Perhaps it was a bit harsh (sorry!), but my comment was preemptive in nature. I've noticed a trend around here that emo amps don't get the love they deserve, and then noosh's comment implying that everyone was doing me a favor by NOT helping me find an emo, pretty much set off my warning bells that this might turn into yet-another-emo-bashfest.

Perhaps my comment was premature, but you cannot deny that emo-bashing is a common sport in these parts... I'm ready and willing to consider other attractive options; but, I just don't want to sift through anti-emo posts to do so. Make sense?

cstmar01> Thanks for the recommendation. I will continue to watch Audiogon every day looking at the alternatives. Adcom is certainly on my short-list of worthwhile options, so thank you for the specific model info and pricing data!

As far as Emotiva XPA-5 prices go, I just missed two sales in the last few weeks that were for $500 and $550 each. :( It's with those prices in mind that my search for a great deal continues.

Given the quality of each of the major brands, I think whatever amp I finally grab will work out great for both my current speakers and whatever I upgrade to in the future. I'll probably never have truly "high-end" speakers, so the average 5ch amps will probably be able to power anything I pick up in the next 10-15 years. I just picked up the M70's last month, so I don't plan on upgrading speakers anytime soon. But, when I do, I think most of the 5ch options we're discussing here will work just fine.

I know that wpc isn't everything. That said, I really hope to push at least a clean 200w/ch @ 8 ohms, so I'd prefer to explore only those options that offer that much power, or more.

Thanks to everyone who continues to assist me regardless of "bozo list" status. ;)

In your first posting, you asked and I gave you my opinion...simple as that. The one who set off warning bells for you was a certain troll whom I wont mention. Ive heard EMO amps and think they are overpriced. Thats not bashing, Its my opinion.

The wink behind my post indicates the comment was meant in jest and was not to be taken seriously.

I hope you find what you are looking for, but it has always been my thought that there is better out there if you are willing to consider the used market. NAD, Sunfire, and Rotel are the first that come to mind.

This is NOT saying Emo is not a good amp, rather they are not my cup of tea. :) The backlash you point out had nothing to do with their product. It was due to several Emo owners coming in here at the same time with an agenda to push, telling those of us that have very high end rigs(I am not among them) that they all wasted their money on 10k worth of amps when a 1k Emo was not only cheaper, but far better sonically. Not only would such a claim be factually untrue, it was also highly insulting.

Fair enough... all is well. I don't buy into hype, so I pretty much ignore anyone with an apparent agenda -- pro, anti, or otherwise. As I said, I have heard the emo-M70 combination, and loved it, so I remain interested in finding a used XPA-5 for myself.

I have also heard other great amps from almost every one of the brands named in this thread. I am open to any of them, and I'm obviously willing to buy used.

So, without further contraversy, please do offer up whatever deals you stumble upon, and I will be certain to explore each and every one of them with an open mind... I promise!

No luck yet. Just before I entered the market for one, there were two sales on the net for $500 and $550. The few that I've found since have all been too close to full price to be worthwhile.

    /still looking!
