SDA SRS 3.1TL's

Hey all,
I almost feel like I dont even belong here with you guys with my "tiny" 3.1's!
just kidding... I love mine. They STILL work great and I still have the original SL3000 in each speaker (well actually they are the second pair) I fried the first...guess my polyswitches didnt work (So as a precaution: POLK told me then to add 1amp fast acting fuse on the new set. That was 1995. Is that ok to leave the fuses alone and leave them intact? I think I would sleep better...LOL
I ordered the new RD0198-1's from polk yesterday
the tech said: I dont need to change anything except drop them in. Is this also right?
I do understand the process and fundimentals of upgrades and I CAN READ, however I have searched this site for anything on my speakers and to no avail, nothing shows up. And also since this is my FIRST official post, can anyone show me mercy and point me into the further directions as what things nexzt should I ponder or do next?
I have NO schematics on the 3.1TL's. However I do have a manual I found online.
So any help at all would be nice to have right now.
Thanks,

Matt

Hey Matt, welcome to the jungle. Excellent pair of speakers you have there. I would buy another pair in a heartbeat. Alas, I sold mine about 6 months ago.
There should be a bunch of info here. Try searching SRS 3.1 crossover or something like that.
You will really like those 198 tweets. A definite improvement. And just so you know, your speakers don't have polyswitches, so you need to be careful. It's probably why Polk suggested the fuses. Make sure you give them plenty of CURRENT. Don't let watts per channel do all the talking.
    Are yours oak or walnut?

Hey Stubby Not sure what you mean by "dont let wpc do all the talking."? please explain.

    And my 3.1's are oak.
    I have them biamped with:
1-Hafler 9500 trans nova for the low side. 250wpc x2@8ohms.
    1-Carver tfm35 for the high side. 250wpc x2@8ohms.

Ive had this rig since the 90's...
I really wish I could find another Hafler 9500 to pair with the one I have. But must be patient if I am able to find one :(

From what I have read in the past, the 3.1TL's did not have poly switches. So, be careful.

Matt here is one thread that may help with installation of the rings (if and when Larry does another run of them, hopefully when he does). There are a few other threads for the 3.1TL's but I haven't dug them out yet.

The 3.1tl has more bass than the 1C. Both are excellent speakers but between the better bass and the Sl3000 tweeters, I would pick the 3.1tl's over the 1C's.

Thanks for the flowers bluecomet! My 3.1's may be smaller than it's bigger brothers, but they are by far are NO wimps! They were designed for smaller space in mind, and they match my surroundings. So far they have met my needs.

Hey Matt, welcome to the club!

The SDA-1C came with the SL2000 as oppose to the SL3000 that your SRS-3.1TL have. The TL suffix in the model number indicates the your speakers have the SL3000, as do all speakers with the TL suffix have the SL3000.

    Matt,

I would recommend doing the crossovers first (huge sound improvement after being done) and then dynamat extreme the drivers and PR. You can Mortite the drivers, PR (if you feel inclined) and then add Larry's rings when he makes the next sets. I will send Larry a template for the rings so you won't have to cut them. Your 3.1TL's will sound phenominal after all is done. Believe me, they can sound better.

Hey Matt, you should be in good shape with the amps you have. What I was saying with WPC - many people here use high quality tube amps with their SDA's that do not have high power ratings as far as "watts". They do have real he-man power supplies and caps and can sound like much larger amps.

They provide the current necessary for clean power and sound. Some solid state amps can have high WPC ratings, but have limited power supply and smallish caps that cannot keep up with an SDA's impedance curves, which can dip to below 4 ohms at times.

Most of the solid state amps used around here are Carver, Adcom, Acurus, Rotel, etc. that have "good parts":D. Your Hafler would also fit the bill!
