How can someone do this to such a fine speaker????

Probably because they wanted to.It's theirs, not yours.
If you can't hear a difference, don't waste your money.

I think the point the OP was trying to make, was, that if he didn't like the sound of the speaker, there are other, less permanent solutions to the problem.
I refuse to argue with idiots, because people can't tell the DIFFERENCE!

I like Herbie's tube dampers and turntable mats, but stick-on dots for expensive woodgrain speakers pushing it for me.

Well, I just pulled off the impossible by doing a double-blind comparison all by myself, purely by virtue of the fact that I completely and stupidly forgot what I did last. I guess that getting old does have its advantages after all :D

He may have a hell of a time selling it because of the Herbie dots. I know I wouldn't buy them.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that the Herbie's dots do or don't work. I just wouldn't put them on my speakers unless I knew they could be removed easily with no damage or stains in case they didn't work or degraded the sound.

With this pair of speakers on sale you don't have any options.

The average Contour buyer is going to pass on these for one reason IMHO:
The seller is only asking for 26% off of retail. A-gon buyers usually need 40% off at least before buying. Herbie's dots are not very expensive.

Mark, have you tried the Herbie's dots? If so what are your impressions? If so, are they removable without any damage or stains?

Adding any mass to a speaker cone is a bad idea.

That speaker needs a couple of coats of good Krylon Metallic Flake and a coat of shellac to complete the project.
If you're going to do it, do it right.
