Ethernet cable, or mother board?

Long story short: My house got hit by lightning twice last week. 1st night modeem, 2nd night tv, sat. dish etc.
Just got internet service back, and have my laptop is hooked up directly to the modem. The router lights up, but wont 'see' the signal. But, even when I hook up my pc directly to the modem, via a 50' ethernet cable, the modem doesn't see the pc. Just the laptop, via the modem cable.
I'm assuming the router is toast, but should I be looking at the cable or the motheroard on the pc? The pc runs fine, just won't see the modem?
Thanks:(

So many possibilities. Is this a DSL or Cable modem?

First, unplug (power down) everything. Power up in this order:

1: cable/DSL modem (does it sync)

2: Router (might need to be reset and reconfig'd)

3: laptop plugged into the router, not wireless (for troubleshooting purposes)

let us know if that fixes it.

Sure, either of those could be bad, best thing to do is start troubleshooting to rule things out. You gotta basically figure out what DOES work and go from there.

Connected your laptop and PC together with a crossover cable. If they can see each other, then you know its not the ports and is the router.

Easiest way i can think of right now to check but then again, I have been known to throw a few bad suggestions in my day partially do to being kicked in the head by a horse as child :o

Connect the lan cable from one computer to another if they blink and light up at both ends than the ports are fine and it is the modem.

Update: I reset-up my pc in the living room. Right now, I've got the modem, then the cable that ususally goes to the router, plugged directly into the laptop. Now when I do the same thing with the pc, nada! I tried re-loading the mobo drivers, but when I open the disk drive, it says all drivers installed.

Then it is possible that your port is dead. Strange that ONLY the port got toasted versus the whole computer.

I would check the device manager under the control panel and see if you can do a quick troubleshoot through windows to get it running.

ALSO!...make sure that the port is ENABLED under the network section. I would assume you started there already :D

Looks like you'll need to buy yourself a wireless adapter......easiest solution...

I'm running XP with updated service packs. Under device manager, the only thing listed is network adaptors, and it lists '1394 net adaptor', which is apparently working?

Nevermind folks. While checking the integrity of the ethernet cable with the laptop, I discovered noticible amount of CARBON on the pc end of the cable. That's when I remembered the 2nd night, when I saw the bolt, I came back inside and found my pc starting up....on it's OWN!
I'll venture a guess that's from a sizable surge, via the ethernet port?
Still don't know why it didn't fry everything though.

Yup, just got back from the pc shop. They installed a pci ethernet card, an it's working. Now I just have to set up the new router, and configure it my laptop.

Next up, determining what's wrong with tv/ satelite. UGH!
