Just watching Travel Channel and they said 50% of Niagara Falls is diverted to a hydro-electric plant that powers New York and Toronto.

Pretty amazing amount of power generated by those falls.

    I tought everyone in Canada and the US would be aware of such. I guess it would make more sense to say that people in Ontario (at least Toronto), Quebec and New York would be aware of such.

    Very impressive, a little history on Niagara Falls providing hydro electricity;

    If you live close by, very interesting to visit :) ;

    Good old hydro-gen. You can't beat water spinning a wheel to make the lights turn on.

    You know....it's also common knowledge that Huanguoshu (in China, that is) is the steepest waterfall in China. And that the Province of Guizhou relies on dozens of dams to generate electricity. That's where this fall is located. lol

    This is to say, I bet 90+ percent of New Yorkers have no idea where their power comes from.

    For that matter, how many know that our state, Maine, supplies some of the electricity for the city of Boston so that its rates can be lowered and we can pay a bit more?

    Sorry, I'm a little crabby this morning. More coffee is in order!

    Just one more reason to get out of Maine. I certainly can't wait to leave. Hopefully I'll have less than a year left!

    Oh right, hydroelectric power, cool stuff!

    There was a time when both countries had to come to an agreement to limit the water used.
    Had they not, there would no longer be a falls. Both sides had plans to get as much of the
    water flow as they could.
    When I lived in upstate, it was a big deal to be able to get the cheap power form the falls.
    The rates were very good.

    I wentt here for the first time last fall. One of the more amazing things about it was seeing the maps of where the falls "used to be," and how far they've receded due to erosion. Nature is amazing.
    If you will it, dude, it is no dream.

    Don't worry, they will find an endangered gnat-minnow or some long-thought extinct version of a butterfly and demand that Niagra be returned to it's natural flow so the planet can be saved.... If life is made better for mankind by doing something, you can bet they will do everything they can to stop it.

    I don't find nature so amazing when I notice how far my hairline has receded, however. Fortunately there are no published maps.

    Same apply here in the Province of Qu?bec, we pay a little to subsidize Hydro Qu?bec so they can generate more electricity and sell it bulk to the US. Qu?bec is very privileged with water falls and many huge projects such as La Baie James are seem as some of the best engineered hydro plant in the world. The La Grande Complex is definitely a marvel of engineering http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Bay_Project
