Walmart Self Check Outs

Walmart is remodeling all of their stores so I have to ask the obvious question of WHY are they getting rid of self check outs and replacing them with six 20 item or less lines?

Why not take those six employees and make them man a self check out station where they can now have twenty four operational check outs at once????

Im just saying.

The retail trade journals have had a few blurbs that indicate that overall the self-checkout experiment wasn't a success.

Be it wal mart or the grocery store, I always use the self-checkout unless there's a register line with nobody in it. I do avoid them at Home Depot unless I'm only getting a few small things (which is never)

    Really?

Wow -- I love self check outs, I can avoid long lines -- grumpy cashiers and I can check myself out alot faster than another person can unless I am buying alot of stuff...

What made the self check out thing not work was the idiot paying with nothing but change... or took 50++++ items to it...

    Oh well...

    I hate self-checkouts.

They take jobs from people and I really don't think the technology is refined enough to be efficient and effective.

The lines for them are usually shorter but it takes twice as long to get through them while someone figures out how to operate it.

It also takes twice as long to ring stuff up because you have to follow specific instructions on how to move merchandise through the process and if you don't do it exactly right, it errors out and you have to do it again.

    Yeah, you can keep them.

I'll use self check out when I can run a cart full of stuff through a gateway with an RF transponder in it to read RFID tags and ring up my entire cart all at once. Until then, put Myrtle and Constance back to work ringing up my groceries.

Walmart probably has more a problem with thieves in the self check out. For instance, you buy shoes that come in the standard shoe box. If you went thru the manned cashier line, they check the box. If you self check...nobody.

Some are better than others, my main complaint is the room allowed for only two bags that you can bag, well what if you have enough items or large enough items that it requires 3 bags? try and move one of the bags to another area and the machine goes schizo on you :p halting all progress made. And depending on whether the 5 people ahead of you are smart enough to figure out how to use the machine it can take longer than going to a cashier.

I guess I'm one of the lucky ones; at the grocery store I shop at everyone knows how to use the self-checkout and it's very fast.

I heard that the new CEO of WalMart used to be CEO of Target, so he's bringing a lot of influence/change with him. Supposedly that's why all the WalMart's I've been in recently have remodeled and have wider, less cluttered aisles.

I hate the ones at Home depot. There's always one line backed up, and
a whole bunch of these. Everything's either too big(lumber)
or too small(screws, etc) for it to work on self check out.
And then there's the fact you can't buy spray paint through self check out-
    needs age verification!

Thast the downside to these is everyone of these are different so once you think you have one figured out at a store the next one wil foul you up at a different store :p

Self check-out has it's ups and downs.

The main upper is that walmart NEVER has anyone working the registers and the lines are out the **** of the store due to this. Then you can just slip on by with your bag of cheetohs and bottle of fresca and be on your merry way!

Downer, the damn things never work!...Always tells me to put my item back on the belt!

Exactly. The self checkout at Lowes Hardware is an EXTREMELY frustrating experience for the same reasons. That's the only place I despise using it. Past that, I don't mind it at the grocery store unless I'm making a fruits/veggies run and have a bunch of stuff that I've bagged up myself (which I'll need assistance with ringing up.)

I really hate the fact in some places, you have one employee watching four
of these, and you can plainly see a good check out person, could do all
the work and get the customers out faster that the four DIY checkouts do.
They are ok for a one or two item run, but overall they stink.
They are replacing them in some stores due to customer complaints.

I think this might also be a generational thing.

I don't know exactly where the age cutoffs are, but I suspect somewhere between 30 and 40 where you are more likely to embrace self-checkout when you are 30's and under and more likely to want a cashier 40's and over.

It might be interesting to create a couple of age bracketed surveys of those who prefer self-checkout, and those who dislike self-checkout.

    Yep, same here.

When I shop I don't want to have to deal with people, I just want to go in and get out. Self-check out makes it that much easier and one less person I have to deal with.

I can't remember the last time I've been in a Walmart's 20 item or less lines
(usually I'm buying 1 or 2 cartons of goat milk, since it's one of the few places in town that carries it)
when I HAVEN'T been behind someone who has way MORE than 20 items and is paying with a personal check.

our self check outs are annoying. half the time if you get something and it doesn't scan correctly it will cause it to freeze up or whatever and makes it slower than just going through the regular check out. Also due to me being younger I find that their "lane patrol" has to constantly watch me anytime I'm there because I might steal that 4.99 wash cloth I just bought...its annoying.

WalMart remodels every five years so shoppers wander around looking for items that they used to know the location of.The more a customer wanders around looking, the more impulse items they buy. This is not just a practice of Walmart, most big name stores do the same thing.

I refuse to shop at grocery stores w/o self checkouts. I can see why they are popular. Scanning your own stuff gives the illusion that you are moving quicker... and I don't have to deal with an attendant. One attendant can monitor 4-8 self checkouts, this saves them money.
