Car subs in the house?

I currently have 2 12" subs in the car that are about 10 years old. They still sound great though and are in very good shape considering. I only listen to sports radio now and was curious if I could move them into the house. i know that the box they are in now would not work but was curious if i could build my own enclosure and buy a plate amp for them. I thought that a dual 12 sealed box would be better than the PSW110 i have now. Any opinions on this?

Just an idea?

Will your amp handle the ohm load you can put the subwoofers at?

If each sub is 4 ohm, you could rewire them in series to get 8 ohms. JL audio has a nice tutorial on wiring subs in series/parallel. At any rate, with two speakers, you have a 99% chance of being able to wire them to a plate amp. Most plate amps will handle a 4 ohm mono load, anyways, so even DVC subs will work.

    Which driver/speaker is it?

Usually, subs designed exclusively for cau audio don't sound too hot in a house. Once you find out which sub it is, we can have a closer look at it's potential.

Also very true. A lot of car audio subs dont do much under 30Hz. But their are some car audio subs that I would rather have than most of the pre-made subwoofer systems out there for home.

I think I remember Jstas commenting on this subject a while back that he had success with auto subs in the home. It seemed like a lot of work to me though.

Also should have probably asked...is this for home theater or is this for music?

they are Orion subs. I will need to get them out of the trunk to know for sure what model or anything. This would be for HT mainly. I will get them out after work and see what I can find out about them.

I know they work if you put them in a Sonotube for home use. A buddy made a set years ago and still uses them. I believe his subs were made by Rockford Fosgate from back in the day. Not the most amazing specs on the subs themselves but tuned in the right enclosure they definitely shake a floor. I think they are cool sounding and neat cause they are DIY and not just bought.

Also, He has tried a couple of pre-made subs and still likes the sonosubs better.

If you look it up on the web you will see a ton a stuff for this.

Orion has a few models of subs. The ones I remember from back in the day are the HCCA series.

    Which model is it?

DIY subwoofers using a car sub isn't much more different than building your own sub using a driver from another home subwoofer or a replacement/OEM driver/etc.

You would need to get the T/S parameters for it, that way you can build the proper enclosure for said-driver.

Most likely, the sub you're going to use would be better suited for HT-duty rather than music unless of course it were a higher-end+musical subwoofer which normally comes at a higher $$$ anyway just the same way home-audio subwoofers do.

The title caused me to flash back to the day my mom drove her car through a wall and into the dining room, apparently because she was momentarily confused about which pedal was the brake! She had been operating the lawn tractor for an hour or so, and the brake was on the right... Afterward, she went to put her car in the garage and after drifting it in, decided to mash on the brake... which turned out to be the accelerator!

She hasn't lived that one down for 20 years. :)

A sub is a sub... as long as the impedance is safe for the amplifier, it should work in the house.

It's like building your own DIY sub with driver and plate amp. Just make sure your box size is calculated correctly, and you should be good to go.

I did this and it works really well. I put two 15" dvc momo's in series and drive them with a carver pm 350 bridged at 900 watts.
